John Mark Petrini
Sharon High, IUP alumnus was avid sports fan

John Mark Petrini, 130 Case Ave., Sharon, passed away peacefully at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday (12-18-02) in St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Youngstown following an extended illness. He was 59.

He was born June 2, 1943, in Sharon the son of Mark L. and Clara Sullivan Petrini.

A lifelong city resident, John played football for the Sharon Tigers and graduated in 1961. A loyal Sharon fan, he was active for many years with the Sharon Touchdown Club.

Mr. Petrini also played football for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Indians, where he graduated in 1966 with a degree in education.

Before his illness, John belonged to numerous service, religious and social organizations. He currently was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 684, Sons of Italy Shenango Valley Lodge 875 and Slovenian Workingmen's Educational Club, all in Sharon.

John was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates fan and he enjoyed playing cards, especially euchre.

His wife, the former Sharon J. Brush, whom he married on Jan. 28, 1978, survives at home. He also leaves his daughter, Jennifer J. Petrini of Pittsburgh; and his son, Mark B. Petrini, at home.

He is survived by his mother, Sharon; his four sisters, Mary Jane and Alma Clare Petrini, both of Oakton, Va.; Joanne Kathleen Petrini of Hermitage; and Theresa Marie Vernon and her husband, David, of Sharon; and one brother, James Edward Petrini, of Chicago.

An infant son and his father, who passed away on Sept. 19, 1998, preceded Mr. Petrini in death.

Vincent James Gagliardi

Retired state inspector

was WWII Navy veteran

Vincent James Gagliardi, 398 Ellis Ave., Hermitage, passed away peacefully in his sleep Thursday morning (12-19-02) at his residence. He was 80.

He was born Jan. 22, 1922, in Farrell to Joseph and Catherine Kuklo Gagliardi.

The 1940 alumnus of Farrell High School retired in 1986 as a safety inspector for the state Department of Labor and Industry, where he had been employed for 17 years.

Vince previously was a salesman for Erie Brewing Co., maker of Koehler beer, where he was affectionately known as "Koehler Jim."

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Sharon; and a former member of St. Ann's Church, Farrell, where he was a past officer and a 25-year member of the Men's Club. He also sang in the St. Ann's Choir for more than 25 years.

He was a life member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Valley Council 4003, Farrell. He was a current member of Knights of Columbus Sharon Council 684, where he was a former Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator.

He was a Fourth-Degree Knight of the Sharon Assembly and past president of the Sharon Columbian Home Corp. He also was past president of the Christopher Columbus Society in Farrell.

A decorated war veteran, Vince was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He served aboard the troop transport Admiral Benson A.P. 120. He served in the Asiatic, Pacific, African, Middle Eastern and European theaters and received the Philippines Liberation and Japanese Occupation ribbons.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.

Vince was a former umpire for Hickory Little League, Hermitage, and earlier in his life was an end man in the famous Farrell Wolves minstrel shows.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, the former Irene S. Geletka, whom he married on Oct. 31, 1944, in St. Ann's Church. He also leaves two sons, Richard V. Gagliardi and his wife, Sharon, of Masury; and James J. Gagliardi of Hermitage; one daughter, Karen J. Swanson of Hermitage; three brothers, Joseph Gagliardi and his wife, Maryann, of Sharon; Frank Gagliardi and his wife, Dot, of Sharpsville; and Domenic Gagliardi and his wife, Shirley, of Sharon; two sisters, Julia Gagliardi and Mary Doddato, both of Sharpsville; four grandchildren, Mrs. Raymond (Susan M.) Price Jr., Anthony J. Gagliardi and his wife, Melissa, of Hubbard; Diana L. Swanson and Kylie J. Swanson; and four great-grandchildren, Taylor Price, Cody Price, Claire Gagliardi and one due in February.

His parents; three brothers, Michael, William and Fred Gagliardi; and a sister, Rose Busco, preceded him in death.

Keith Smith
Retired PennDOT worker was avid outdoorsman

Keith Smith, 2772 Georgetown Road, Irwin Township, Venango County, died at 5:43 p.m. Wednesday (12-18-02) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after a three-week illness. He was 76.

Mr. Smith was born Oct. 28, 1926, in Irwin Township, to Francis "Frank" E. and Iva Gilmore Smith.

He retired from PennDOT of Venango County, where he was a heavy equipment operator from 1964 to 1987.

Mr. Smith was a Protestant and an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Betty Winifred Hart, whom he married May 21, 1948; a daughter, Mrs. Clark (Kathy) Felix, Polk; three sons, Robert K. Smith and his wife, Sarah, Kennerdell; Gary A. Smith and his wife, Debra, Polk; and Douglas B. Smith and his wife, Lisa, Kennerdell; and seven grandchildren, R. Scott Smith, Jonathan Smith, Jacob Smith, Angie Trowbridge, Marlene Griffin, Teresa Anderson and Craig Felix.

His parents and one sister, Kathryn Hovis, preceded him in death.

Linda Sue Harte

Former housekeeper

Linda Sue Harte, 112 Woodside Drive, Pine Township, died at 6:32 p.m. Wednesday (12-18-02) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after a nine-month illness. She was 55.

Mrs. Harte was born April 5, 1947, in Grove City, to Irvin and Eldene Adams Cookson.

She attended Grove City schools and was a housekeeper. Mrs. Harte a Protestant.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Thomas L. (Melinda Sue) Fleeger, Grove City; her parents, Grove City; a brother, Larry J. Cookson, Mercer; and two grandsons, Dallas Montana Bo Harte, Grove City; and Brian Thomas Fleeger.

Her husband, Thomas A. Harte; and a sister, Nancy Lee Tiche, preceded her in death.

Kathleen M. McDonald

Homemaker, nurse was

devoted to her family

Kathleen M. McDonald, 956 Alcoma St., Sharon, died at 9:27 p.m. Wednesday (12-18-02) at her residence. She was 78.

Mrs. McDonald was born Jan. 14, 1924, in Kane, Pa., to Karl and Margaret Nichols Swanson.

She graduated in 1946 as a registered nurse from Meadville School of Nursing.

Mrs. McDonald was a homemaker.

The most important thing to her was family.

Her husband, J. Parker McDonald died Feb. 14, 1994.

Survivors include: two sons, Jay McDonald, Leesburg, Va.; and Scott and Joy McDonald, Forreston, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Jay (Gretchen) Workman, Arlington, Texas; Mrs. Robert (Sandy) Tarkanick, Hermitage; and Tina McDonald, Sharon; and two sisters, Helen Johnson, Bradford, Pa.; and Clara Jane Shinafelt, Palm Harbor, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, James Swanson.

Elizabeth M. Timko
Farrell resident belonged to St. Stephen in Niles

Elizabeth M. Timko, 218 Patt Drive, Farrell, formerly of Niles, Ohio, died on Wednesday (12-18-02) in John XXIII Home, Hermitage. She was 85.

She was born in Budapest, Hungary on Jan. 4, 1917, to Steve and Julia Sabo Dankovich, and came to the United States in 1934.

She married Paul John Timko on Feb. 16, 1935. He preceded her in death on June 16, 1991.

Mrs. Timko was a member of St. Stephen Church, Niles, the Altar and Rosary Society of Christ Our King Church, Warren, Ohio; volunteer for Notre Dame Sisters in Warren; and an avid bingo player.

Surviving are: two sons, Paul S. Timko, Okeechobee, Fla.; and Dr. Thomas Timko, Canfield, Ohio; two daughters, Dorothy Mancino of Farrell; and Elizabeth Entler of Niles; a sister, Margaret Beleny of Mineral Ridge, Ohio; two brothers, John Sabo of Warren, Ohio; and William Sabo of California; 21 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

A grandchild preceded her in death.
