Robert C. Thorne George Junior retiree also worked at area plants Robert C. Thorne, a resident since 1965 of 217 Madison Ave., Grove City, died at 1:34 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, in the emergency room of United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after a five-year illness. He was 67. Mr. Thorne was born Aug. 16, 1935, in Grove City to William H. Thorne and Doris Chappel Thorne. A 1953 graduate of Grove City High School, he also graduated from Bendix School of Electronics, Towson, Md. He retired in 1997 from George Junior Republic in Pine Township. He was formerly a machinist at General Electric Co., Grove City and Pine Township; was an electrician at the former Kennametal plant, Slippery Rock; and from 1979 to 1991, was an over-the-road truck driver. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. Mr. Thorne was of theMethodist faith and was a member of Grove City Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 603. He loved working on old cars and listening to music and was known as "Thunder Mug" in the citizens band radio circle. His wife, the former Laretta Mae Van Dyke, whom he married Aug. 15, 1964, died April 22, 1981. Surviving are: a son, Robert J. Thorne and his wife Mariellen Thorne, Grove City; a companion, Barbara L. Butler, Grove City; a sister, Judy Nemett and her husband John, Clintonville; a brother, William W. Thorne, Alma, Mich.; and two grandchildren, Carly and Connor Thorne, Grove City. Besides his wife, Mr. Thorne was preceded in death by his parents.
THORNE Walter F. Buterbaugh Sr. Shenango Inc. retiree owned tavern in Andover A funeral service will be held Monday for Walter F. Buterbaugh Sr., 167 W. Main St., Andover, formerly of Burghill. He died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, in St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township. He was 84. Mr. Buterbaugh was born Jan. 2, 1918, in Burnside, Pa., to Jacob L. Buterbaugh and Violet Thompson Buterbaugh. He had lived in Andover since 1962. Mr. Buterbaugh owned and operated the Lighthouse Tavern in Andover for more than 29 years. He also worked for Shenango Inc. in Sharpsville for 43 years, retiring as a foreman in 1980. He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 276, Greenville. He belonged to Hartford Grange for more than 25 years and he volunteered for the Hartford Fire Department. Mr. Buterbaugh enjoyed traveling, fishing and reading. He married Isaphene S. Wright on June 2, 1962. She survives in Greenville. Also surviving are: two sons, Walter F. Buterbaugh Jr., Sharpsville; and Phillip A. Buterbaugh, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Jean O. George, Winter Garden, Fla.; and Phyllis A. Dulick, Sharon; a stepdaughter, Donna Drnek, Adamsville; a stepson, John L. Waid Jr., Greenville; a brother, Lloyd Buterbaugh, Commodore, Pa.; two sisters, Kathryn Howard, Richland, Mo.; and Elizabeth Clark, Harmony, Pa.; a half brother, Arthur Lydic, Penn Run, Pa.; a half sister, Ruth Myers, Sharon; and two stepbrothers, Chester Lydic, Commodore; and James Lydic, Uniontown, Pa. He also leaves 24 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Mr. Buterbaugh was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Arthur W. Lydic; two sons, John Buterbaugh and William L. Buterbaugh Sr.; an infant sister; a half brother, Dwight Lydic; and a stepbrother, Gene Lydic. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Homes, 339 E. Jamestown Road, Greenville 16125.
BUTERBAUGH Frank L. Swogger, Sr. Retired steelworker golfed, scored two holes-in-one A funeral service was held Friday for Frank L. Swogger Sr. of 29 N. Third St., Sharpsville. He passed away peacefully at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 78. He was born Jan. 6, 1924, in Sharon, a son of Frank Lewis Swogger and Frances Mary Waring Swogger. Mr. Swogger attended Sharon schools. He was a member of the United Steelworkers of America and was employed for 35 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp. in Farrell, where he worked in the cold roll department until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Swogger was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sharpsville. He was an avid golfer and scored two holes-in-one. During World War II, he served with the Army in the European Theater of Operations and received five Bronze Stars. His first wife, the former Hazel Theresa Haney, whom he married March 6, 1943, passed away Feb. 10, 1998. His second wife, Betty J. Stoner Swogger, whom he married Oct. 2, 1999, passed away Sept. 21, 2000. His five sons survive: Frank L. Swogger Jr. and his wife Nancy and Timothy J. Swogger and his wife Sandra, all Sharon; James F. Swogger and his wife Margaret and David M. Swogger and his wife Holly, all Sharpsville; and Daniel J. Swogger and his wife Norma, in Florida. He also leaves a sister, Della Mae Jones of West Middlesex, and a brother, William Swogger and his wife, Linder, Ocala, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Beside his wives, he was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Swogger, and two sisters, Irene and Eileen Boles. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Ave., Sharon 16146.
SWOGGER Julia 'Juge' Forker Sharon woman co-owned store, served on boards A funeral service will be held Saturday for Julia "Juge" Forker, 558 Boyd Drive, Hermitage, formerly of 1315 Yahres Ave., Sharon. She died at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 77. Mrs. Forker was born Jan. 23, 1925, in Sharon to Fred Ansley Service and Anna Vaughn Service. A graduate of Sharon High School and Connecticut College For Women, she co-owned and operated Dee's and Juge's clothing store on Bentley Avenue in Sharon for more than 20 years. She served on the advisory board for Shenango Campus of Pennsylvania State University; the board of directors for F.H. Buhl Club; and the board of the Mercer County Unit of the American Cancer Society, all Sharon. She also belonged to the Sharon Regional Health System Auxiliary, Sharon Country Club, Meals-on-Wheels of the Shenango Valley and Silver Lake Tennis Association and was a founding member of the Sharon Sewing Club. She was a lifelong active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Sharon. Her husband, Henry Porter Forker III, whom she married in 1948, died in 1965. Surviving are: two daughters, Annette Weld, Ontario, N.Y., and Julia Buhl Forker, College Park, Md.; two sons, Thomas S. Forker, Havertown, Pa., and Charles Lee Forker, Phoenix; and 10 grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Henry P. "Chick" Forker IV. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Buhl Farm Trust, 28 N. Pine Ave, Sharon 16146.
