Joseph 'Joe' Richard Leavens
'64 Farrell grad was Sawhill retiree, St. Adalbert member

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday for Joseph "Joe" Richard Leavens, 1322 Stevenson Road, Masury. He died of natural causes at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, in Cleveland Clinic after a brief illness. He was 56.

Mr. Leavens was born Aug. 6, 1946, in Sharon to Joseph "Jokey" Leavens and Leona Krupa Leavens.

He was a graduate of Farrell High School Class of 1964, having played fullback on the school's football team. He retired after 30 years of employment with Sawhill Tubular Co., where he was a supervisor in the production planning department.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Mr. Leavens served from 1964 to 1968 aboard the USS Utina as a communications officer.

He was a lifetime member of St. Adalbert's Church in Farrell and served as a past president of the church's Men's Club.

Mr. Leavens was an avid golfer and a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians and Browns.

He enjoyed playing with the sunshine of his life, his grandson, Ben.

His wife, the former Helene J. Dolata, whom he married June 3, 1967, survives at home.

Besides his wife, surviving are: his mother, Hubbard; a daughter, Joell Stebelton, wife of Greg, Canfield, Ohio; a sister, Marilyn Fulton, wife of Thomas, Riva, Md.; and a grandson, Joseph Stebelton.

Mr. Leavens was preceded in death by his father.

Allen W. Bestwick

PennDOT retiree was

Fairview Twp. supervisor

A funeral service will be held Saturday for Allen W. Bestwick of 424 Delaware Road, Greystone Country Estates of Fredonia, formerly of 167 Coolspring Road, Fairview Township. He died at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday (1-8-03) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, after a brief illness. He was 89.

Mr. Bestwick was born March 30, 1913, in Lake Township, Mercer County, to William V. "W.T." and Flodie Jane Taylor Bestwick.

He attended the former Godfrey Country School in Fairview Township and the former Fredonia High School. In his early years he worked as a driver for Pennland, formerly known as the Marshall Tank Lines; and Koppers Company of Pittsburgh. He retired from PennDOT in 1978 as a bridge foreman after 13 years of service.

He was a member of Coolspring Presbyterian Church in Fairview Township. He enjoyed visiting with his family and friends. He served as a Fairview Township supervisor for 12 years. He was a member of the Jackson Grange 1506 and was an active member of Stoneboro Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife, the former Bessie L. Griffin, whom he married April 16, 1938. She survives at Woodland Place, 745 Greenville Road, Coolspring Township.

Also surviving are one daughter, Barbara E. Bestwick of 424 Delaware Road, Fredonia; and nine nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glenn Bestwick and Jack Bestwick; four sisters, Edith Lucille Bestwick, Elizabeth Pauline Bestwick, Mildred Thompson and Mary Esther Morris.

William 'Bill' Lee Richards

Longtime Grove City man was Bashlin craftsman

ERIE -- William "Bill" Lee Richards, Edinboro Manor, a former resident for more than 50 years of Lincoln Avenue in Grove City, died at 5:46 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003, in St. Vincent Health Center after a brief illness. He was 55.

Mr. Richards was born June 20, 1947, in Grove City to William Carl "Rip" Richards and Virginia Mae "Janie" McGill Richards.

An alumnus of Grove City High School, he retired after 29 years as a craftsman for Bashlin Industries Inc. of Grove City.

Mr. Richards was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Grove City.

He enjoyed ceramics, old music, crafts and gardening.

Surviving are: one sister, Cathy M. Whitcomb, wife of George, Sandy Lake; and one brother, Jeffrey H. Richards, husband of Peggy, Edinboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

A funeral service will be held Monday for Edward Davis, 913 Market St., Farrell. He died at 10:23 a.m. Wednesday (1-8-03) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 60.

Mr. Davis was born Nov. 2, 1942, in Farrell to John Frank Davis and Edna Spruill Davis.

He was a graduate of Phelps Vocational School in Washington D.C.

Mr. Davis was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Masury and was an avid Washington Redskins fan.

Surviving are: a daughter, Sonara Clark, Upper Marlboro, Md.; his fiancee, Mary Sockwell, Pittsburgh; four brothers, William Davis, Washington, D.C.; David Davis and his wife Ruby, Atlanta; Paul Davis and his wife Sadie, Youngstown; and Earnest Davis and his wife Bernice, also Washington; two sisters, Janet D. Grear, Sharon; and Maggie R. McNair, Washington; and two grandchildren.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Franklin Davis.

Bonnita Mae Burdette Locke

Mercer woman belonged to Bible Baptist Church

Bonnita Mae Burdette Locke, 214 N. Otter St., Mercer, died at 11:25 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, after an extended illness. She was 77.

Mrs. Locke was born Feb. 23, 1925, in Bellville, Ohio, to Clarence H. Burdette and Mary L. Evans Burdette.

She was previously employed at the former Mercer Cottage Hospital and was a member of Bible Baptist Church in Mercer.

Her husband, Harold C. Locke, whom she married May 4, 1951, is deceased.

Surviving are: a daughter, Roberta, wife of Duane McFarland, Wheatland; two sons, H. Charles Locke, Mercer; and James R. Locke, Farrell; a sister, Ethel Anderson, Warren, Ohio; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Locke was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Gerald A. Locke; and two brothers, William and Robert Burdette.

David M. Beshero

New Castle man worked

at Cortland car dealership

WARREN, Ohio -- David M. Beshero, 406 Waldo St., New Castle, died at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, in Trumbull Memorial Hospital. He was 43.

Mr. Beshero was born Jan. 1, 1960, in New Castle to George A. Beshero and Joann M. Rice Beshero.

A graduate of New Castle High School, he attended Youngstown State University and was a finance manager for four years at Apostolakis Honda in Cortland.

As a Maronite Catholic, Mr. Beshero was a member of St. John's Baptist Maronite Church in New Castle.

He very much enjoyed spending time with his son, David. He was an avid Steelers fan and golfer.

Mr. Beshero was formerly married to Cathy Forkey of New Castle.

Besides his former wife, surviving are: his mother, New Castle; a companion, Pam Karns, Hermitage; his son, David C. Beshero, New Castle; two brothers, George A. Beshero II, Poland, Ohio; and Richard C. Beshero, New Castle; and a sister, Terry A. Ferrucci, Wampum. He is also survived by three nieces and two nephews.

Mr. Beshero was preceded in death by his father, George A. Beshero, who died June 5, 1997; his paternal grandparents, Charles and Anna Beshero; and his maternal grandparents, Naseeb and Thresa Rice.

Marjorie R. Cornwell

First Presbyterian deacon had worked in Sharon

Marjorie R. Cornwell, Hubbard, died at 10:10 a.m. Saturday, Jan., 4, 2003, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 85.

Mrs. Cornwell was born Jan. 26, 1917, in Titusville to Edwin J. Robinson and Grace Marguerite Kingsbury Robinson.

A 1935 graduate of Academy High School in Erie, she came to Sharon in 1937 to teach cosmetology for Bernice Caldwell. She later worked at Fritz Patrick's as well as Roberts Hardware, Dr. Daniel Phythian and what is now Sharon Regional Health System. She was also at one time a secretary at Sharon Junior High School.

As a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sharon, Mrs. Cornwell served as a deacon for many years and belonged to the Women's Association.

She was a member of National Wildlife Association and was very accomplished in crewelwork and painting in both watercolors and oils.

Her husband, Walter J. Cornwell, whom she married May 6, 1949, died Sept. 11, 1982.

Surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Cornwell was preceded in death by her parents.
