Daniel D. Shaffer Jr. Wheatland Tube worker was archer, motorcyclist Daniel D. Shaffer Jr., 216 S. Myers Ave., Sharon, died at 11:30 p.m. Friday (1-24-03) in his home, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness. He was 48. Mr. Shaffer was born June 21, 1954, to Daniel D. and June Devlin Shaffer. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1972. He has worked for Wheatland Tube Co., Wheatland, for 29 years as a lowboy craneman. He was a life member and usher of the Christ Lutheran Church, Sharon. He was a member of the Steel Workers Union 1660, the National Rifle Association, the Physically Challenged Bow Hunters of America, Harley Owners Group and the A.B.A.T.E. of Mercer County. He was a devoted blood donor for the American Red Cross, and he enjoyed target shooting, hunting, archery hunting, trout and fly fishing all in the mountains of Pennsylvania. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles all of his life, boating and water skiing. Mr. Sparks is survived by his wife, Donna (Wojtalik) Shaffer, who lives at home where she works as a self-employed seamstress. They married on Dec. 21, 1974. He is also survived by a daughter, Mary Lou Shaffer and her fiancé, Bryan Spory, New Castle; three sisters, Donna and her husband Larry R. Shreffler, Tionesta.; Norma Black of Tionesta where she is a co-owner of B&H Country Store with Linda Householder; and Shirley and her husband James Fleegle, Rehobeth Beach, Del.; 22 nieces and nephews; and 11 great-nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Lutheran Church or the Physically Challenged Bow Hunters of America, RR 1, Box 470, New Alexandra, Pa. 15670-9240.
SHAFFER Dorothy M. Knapp Ex-Delaware Township woman was homemaker Dorothy M. Knapp, a resident of St. Paul Homes, 339 E. Jamestown Road, West Salem Township, formerly of 788 Mercer Road, Delaware Township, died at 7:35 a.m. Saturday (1-25-03) at the nursing home. She was 86. She was born on March 2, 1916, a daughter of the late Fred D. and Mary (Mowry) Reichard. On Oct. 5, 1940, she married Earl L. Knapp, who preceded her in death on Aug. 9, 1999. Mrs. Knapp was a homemaker and a member of the Christ Community Church, formerly known as St. John's United Church of Christ, Fredonia. She is survived by a son, Gary E. Knapp and his wife Deborah, Greenville; a brother, Norman Reichard and his wife Roberta, Mercer; three granddaughters, Amy Knapp, Germantown, Md.; Stephanie Knapp and Lynell Knapp, both of Alexandria, Va. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Martha Thompson; and a brother, Edwin Reichard.
KNAPP Frances Hackett Frances Hackett, 2220 Hubbard-Masury Road, Hubbard, died at 4 p.m. Saturday (1-25-03) at her residence. She was 76. Obituary information was incomplete.
HACKETT William D. Sparks WWII veteran owned realty company, built own aircraft William D. Sparks, 3137 Hann Hill Road, Hermitage, died at 5:28 a.m. Saturday (1-25-03) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 85. Mr. Sparks was born March 10, 1917 in Chattanooga, Tenn. to Homer H. and Bertha Noye Sparks. He was a graduate of Sharon High School's Class of 1937. Mr. Sparks served in the Army in World War II with the Air Corps in the Pacific Theater. After leaving the service he was the owner of William D. Sparks Reality where he was employed for 55 years until his retirement in January of 2000. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Along with attorney David Lewis and Dr. William Shellenberger he built and flew over 17 aircraft. He was also a pilot and avid flyer. He flew until his late 70s. Mr. Sparks also enjoyed playing racquetball and handball at the F.H. Buhl Club in Sharon. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1338, Sharon. He is survived by his wife, Lucille E. Fromm Sparks, whom he married on April 18, 1945; five sons, William H. and Darlene Sparks, Carson City, Nev.; James E. and Victoria Sparks, Sharpsville; Gary D. Sparks, Marietta, Ohio; Raymond D. and Monica Sparks, Hermitage; and Kenneth W. and Carol Sparks, Olean, N.Y.; and eight grandchildren James, Jared, Eric, Katie, Shannon, Cory, Brian and Matthew Sparks. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert Sparks.
SPARKS Margaret Lois Montgomery Grove City native was foreign language teacher Margaret Lois Montgomery, Shenango Presbyterian Apartments, 150 Waugh Ave., New Wilmington, formerly of Natrona Heights, Pa., died at 1 p.m. Friday (1-24-03) in Jameson Health Center, New Castle, after spending three weeks there. She was 87. Miss Montgomery was born March 8, 1915, in Grove City to Merle D. and Alice Frew Montgomery. A 1933 graduate of Grove City High School, Miss Montgomery graduated from Grove City College in 1937. She went on to earn a degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She retired in 1975 from the former Har Brack, now Highlander, School System where she was a teacher of foreign languages for 38 years. She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association of Allegheny County and a member of the Retired Teachers and National Education Association. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church of Tarentum, Pa. Miss Montgomery is survived by one sister, Ruth Wellington, New Wilmington; two nieces, Margaret Riggs, Malone, N.Y.; and Mary Ann Wade, Fort Myers, Fla.; a nephew, James R. Engstrom, Massena, N.Y.; and 13 great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and twin sisters, Mary Montgomery and Jean Engstrom. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Presbyterian Church of Meals on Wheels, both of Tarentum, Pa.
MONTGOMERY Lois G. Sauers Lois G. Sauers, 160 S. Otter St., Mercer, died at noon Saturday (1-25-03) at UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 86. Obituary information was incomplete.
SAUERS Rosemary M. Askerneese Hayes Ex-clerk at hospital worked for outreach programs Funeral service will be Tuesday (1-28-03) for Rosemary M. Askerneese Hayes, 941 Sharon-New Castle Road, Farrell. She passed away at 7:05 a.m. Thursday (1-23-03) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 66. Mrs. Hayes was born July 16, 1936, in Harlem, N.Y., to Willie C. and Fay E. Green Stultz. The Farrell High School alumna was formerly a clerk of administration at what was then Sharon General Hospital and a librarian in New York City. Involved in outreach programs, she was a worker at Prince of Peace and the Ark House, both in Farrell, through the Green Thumb Program. The former member of Greater Morris Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Farrell, was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Hayes was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of New Murray Bell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7597, Farrell, where she was senior vice president. She also was a member of Mercer County Coordinating Council Chapter of Frontiers International and of the Naomi Chapter 22 Order of the Eastern Star in New York. Her husband, William B. Hayes, whom she married in 1979, preceded her in death Aug. 3, 1990. She was a member of a five-generation family. Surviving are: a daughter, Angela Askerneese, Sharon; a son, Paul L. Askerneese Jr. and his wife, Cheryl, Warren, Ohio; her mother, in Clepper Nursing Home, Sharon; one stepsister, Karen Bracey, Hartford, Conn.; two grandchildren, Natasha L. Askerneese, Masury; and Eugenia C. Grannison, Sharon; and two great-grandchildren, Lewendo L. Teague, Sharon; and Porché L. Mosley, Sharon; her faithful friend, Janet Grear, Sharon; and several cousins, in-laws and friends. Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her father; one daughter, LaPearl Fay Askerneese; and two grandsons.

Judith A. Parker-Budetich Lifelong resident was homemaker, enjoyed bingo Judith A. Parker-Budetich of Masury died Wednesday (1-22-03) at her residence. She was 62. She was born April 7, 1940, in West Middlesex, a daughter of Samuel and Grace Grimm Ryser and was a lifelong area resident. She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bingo. She leaves her companion, Mark Budetich of Masury; four sons, Keith E. Wills of West Middlesex; Donald E. Wills of Bradenton, Fla.; Frank H. (Kimberly) Baker of Masury; and Fred L. (Patricia) Parker of Hermitage; two daughters, Brenda (William) Klingensmith of Warren, Ohio; and April L. Wills of Masury; three brothers, Francis and S. James Ryser, both of West Middlesex; and Richard Ryser of Masury; 21 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her parents, son Robert E. Templeton, and two grandchildren are deceased.
