Stoneboro church member was past president of clubs Helen E. Bortz, 502 Lake Wilhelm Road, New Vernon Township, died at 9:45 a.m. Thursday (1-30-03) after a brief illness in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 87. She was born July 18, 1915, in Yukon, Pa., to Demeter and Marie Fekete Hazi. She attended Farrell High School and was a homemaker. For more than 50 years, she was a member of St. Columbkille Church, Stoneboro, where in earlier years she served as president of the Ladies Guild. She received five papal blessings from five different popes over the years for her extensive work in the church. She was a charter member and past president of the former Stoneboro Women's Club. She had served as president of Lakeview Band Boosters Club and as a volunteer worker for American Cancer Society and American Heart Association. She was an avid bottle collector and loved antiques and flea markets. She enjoyed quilting and fishing. She married Myron H. Bortz on Nov. 26, 1936. He preceded her in death July 10, 1973. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. James W. (Barbara) Heckman, Jackson Center; two sons, Richard M. Bortz and his wife, Mary Lou, Mercer; and James O. Bortz and his wife, Linda, Sandy Lake; and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Emery Hazi, John Hazi, Frank Hazi, Elias Hazi and Robert Hazi; and four sisters, Sophia Fait, Mary Messina, Wilma Klein and an infant sister.
BORTZ Thomas W. Headlee WWII Navy vet worked for Westinghouse ATHENS, Ga. -- Thomas W. Headlee, Athens, passed away Saturday (1-25-03) in his home. He was 86. Mr. Headlee was born Feb. 14, 1916, in Scenery Hill, Pa., to the Rev. David L. and Ella W. Headlee. He graduated from Waynesburg (Pa.) College in 1937. Mr. Headlee served as a lieutenant in the Navy aboard the USS Zeilin in the Pacific during World War II, for which he will remain forever grateful. He began his professional career with Westinghouse Electric Corp. and remained until he retired in 1984 with 47 years of service. He had a passion for golf and working in his yard. He maintained membership in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Sharon Lodge 103. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Mary Catherine Stanton, and their children, Tom Jr., David and Jim as well as their wives, Alice, Marsha and Kathy Headlee; and seven grandchildren, Mike, Graham, Rachel, Hannah, Porter, Katie and John. Other surviving family members include his sister-in-law, Betty Headlee; and his niece, Betty Lynn Cheney, Hermitage. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Esther Deal and May Brockman; and his brother, James Headlee. The family wishes to thank all of the loving and kind people who assisted in his care during his last days. Funeral services were Tuesday (1-28-03). Baxter Koppers retiree, Korean War vet lived in Brookfield William A. Baxter, 117 Brook Drive, Brookfield, died at 5:55 p.m. Wednesday (1-29-03) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 72. Mr. Baxter was born Dec. 10, 1930, in Masury, a son of John and Isabel Abernathy Baxter. William Baxter served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1961 and was in the Korean War. Mr. Baxter was a burner for the former Koppers Steel Co. in Masury for 30 years. He retired in 1981. His memberships included Brookfield Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3535, Hartford; and Korean War Veterans Post 137. His hobbies included collecting wolves and ducks. Survivors include: his wife, Mary (Couts) Baxter, whom he married Jan. 28, 1956; one son, Ken Baxter, Youngstown; three sisters, Betsy Sharley, Westover, Morgantown, W.Va.; Sarah Baxter, Leetonia, Ohio; and Lovie Swogger, Masury; three brothers, Robert Baxter, Brookfield; Thomas Baxter, Warren, Ohio; and James Baxter, Girard, Ohio; two grandchildren, Jay and Steven Baxter; and two great-grandchildren, Steven Baxter Jr. and Alissa Baxter. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Janie Kulikowsky, Agnes Allan and Margaret Nalley; and one brother, Silas Baxter. Harry C. Hobaugh Retiree was WWII vet, married Clark native MOON TOWNSHIP -- Harry C. Hobaugh, Moon Township, Allegheny County, passed away Wednesday (1-29-03) in Friendship Ridge, Beaver. He was 85. Mr. Hobaugh was born Nov. 18, 1917, in New Brighton to the late Harry Lewis and Austie Richardson Hobaugh. Mr. Hobaugh was retired from Sentry Life Insurance, where he had been a salesman. He was previously retired from Alcoa Corp. The U.S. Army veteran of World War II was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Coraopolis. He is survived by his beloved wife, whom he married 53 years ago, the former Pauline Wiekal, originally of Clark. He also is survived by four nieces and one nephew: Jane Gasser and Nancy Giumenti, both Dover, Ohio; James Kastor, Westerville, Ohio; Barbara Perry, Virginia; and Susan Tew, Fort Myers, Fla.; and also great-nieces and -nephews.
HOBAUGH Assunta Smegal Former Farrell woman belonged to Fatima church Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday for Assunta Smegal, John XXIII Home, 2250 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, formerly of Hamilton Avenue, Farrell. She died at 2 p.m. Wednesday (1-29-03) in the nursing home. She was 79. Mrs. Smegal was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Farrell to Peter and Christina Villozzi Arci. The 1941 graduate of Farrell High School was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell. Her husband, John E. Smegal, whom she married Aug. 28, 1946, died Aug. 17, 1998. Surviving are: four children, Mrs. Robert (Christine) Sakonyi, Hermitage; Mrs. Robert (Susan) May, West Middlesex; Mrs. Jeff (Mary Ann) Reynolds, Hermitage; and John A. Smegal, Houston; one sister, Rose Petricini, Buffalo, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Anthony May; a brother, Guido Arci; and a sister in infancy.
SMEGAL Fay E. Stultz Fay E. Stultz, Clepper Convalescent Home, Inc., Sharon, formerly of Lincoln Avenue, Farrell, passed away at 8 p.m. Wednesday (1-29-03) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 82. Obituary information was incomplete.
