Nellie E. Kizima Former Sharon woman was waitress A private funeral is being planned for Nellie E. Kizima, Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, formerly of 325 Columbia St., Sharon. She passed away at 11 a.m. Wednesday (2-5-03) in the home. She was 76. Mrs. Kizima was born Aug. 15, 1926, in Farrell, the daughter of Frank and Helen Shaffer Lewis. She had worked as a waitress for several years in Ohio and Pennsylvania. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Balcerzak and her husband, David, Walker, Mich. She leaves two granddaughters, Christina Eldridge and Shirley Pebbles; and four great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy E. Miller; her second husband, Julius Meszaros; her third husband, Peter Kizima; a daughter, Sharon Arlene Miller; and an infant twin great-grandson.
KIZIMA Dr. Eugene J. Artac Ex-superintendent of Sharon schools served community Dr. Eugene J. Artac, Kingwood, Texas, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (2-5-03) in Kingwood following an extended illness. He was 79. Dr. Artac was born June 26, 1923, in Renton, Pa., to John and Hazel Steier Artac. Upon graduating from Springdale High in 1941, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving two years in Special Services and two years as an Air Cadet/B29 crewman. He was a member of the Air Force band as a trumpet player. He was honorably discharged in 1946, holding a rank of sergeant. He attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, achieving his bachelor of science in 1948; master of science in 1951; and master of education in 1954. He received a doctor of education in administration degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1963. In 1948, Dr. Artac began a career in education that spanned 34 years and 10 school districts throughout western Pennsylvania. He initially served as supervisor of music before progressing to guidance counselor, high school principal, University of Pittsburgh instructor, supervising principal and superintendent. In 1968, Dr. Artac accepted the superintendent position for Sharon City School District, which he held until 1977. He retired in 1982 as superintendent of the Beaver Falls School System. While in Sharon, Dr. Artac was an active volunteer for various community organizations, which included Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce, Junior Achievement Board of Directors, Penn State Advisory Board, Edinboro Advisory Board, Sharon Industrial Development Authority, Rotary, Mayor's Committee for the Performing Arts, United Way, Industrial Information Institute, American Institute for Economics, Sharon City Treatment Center Advisory Board and Urban League Board of Directors. Dr. Artac resided in Sharon from 1968 to 1998 and he was a member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon. His wife, the former Agnes Jean Fedock, whom he married Nov. 28, 1946, passed away Oct. 7, 1996. Dr. Artac was a loving and devoted son, husband, father and grandfather. Dr. Artac was a man of faith. His family was by his side at the time of his death. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Slotta and her husband, Mark, Highland, Mich.; and two sons, Eugene and his wife, Margaret, Sharon; and Myrl and his wife, Linda, Kingwood; a sister, Irene Fliss, Fullerton, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
ARTAC James W. Klingensmith Cooper-Bessemer retiree lived in Jackson Center James W. Klingensmith, 66 Clark St., Jackson Center, died at 10:05 a.m. Thursday (2-6-03) in Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Pine Township, after an extended illness. He was 81. Mr. Klingensmith was born Nov. 21, 1921, in Lake Township to John and Mary L. Hillman Klingensmith. He retired in 1983 after 43 years of service from the former Cooper-Bessemer in Grove City. He was a member of Jackson Center Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and animals. He enjoyed visiting with friends and spending time with his family. In early years, he enjoyed showing horses with his children. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1895, Grove City. The World War II veteran served with the Merchant Marines and traveled around the world twice during his tour of duty. He married Wilda K. Zahniser on Jan. 13, 1945. She preceded him in death July 19, 1996. He is survived by two daughters, Charyn L. Brocklehurst, Jackson Center; and Kay L. Larimer, Jackson Center; one son, Timothy L. Klingensmith, Grove City; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Mary) Ringer, Buffalo, N.Y.; and Betty Stewart, Somerset, Ky.; three grandchildren, Craig W. Brocklehurst and his wife, Crystal, Jackson Center; and Nicole L. Klingensmith and Jessica D. Klingensmith, both Grove City; and two great-grandchildren, Justin and Cayla Greggs, both Grove City. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by eight brothers, Ernie, Jay, Warren, Fred, Joe, Bill, Johnny and infant brother Calvin Klingensmith; and one infant sister, Esther Madeline Klingensmith. KLINGENSMITH Mary L. Mathews Sharon woman was born in Texas Mary L. Mathews, 325 Columbia St., Sharon, passed away at 7:50 p.m. Monday (2-3-03) in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after an extended illness. She was 62. She was born Feb. 29, 1940, in Joaquin, Texas, to Ward Mathews Sr. and Idella Jenkins Mathews. She attended Sharon schools. Surviving are: a son, Michael W. Mathews and his wife, Sheila, Hawthorne, Calif.; a stepson, Clyde Campbell, Lansing, Mich.; three sisters, Mae Ola Holmes, Farrell; Della M. Burton and her husband, Richard, Youngstown; and Vera Mae Diaz, Vineland, N.J.; three grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her parents; and four brothers, Ward Jr., M.T., James A. and William Lee Mathews, preceded her in death.
MATHEWS Lillie M. Thurston Lillie M. Thurston, 15 W. Connelly Blvd., Sharon, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Thursday (2-6-03) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 95. Obituary information was incomplete.
THURSTON Jeannie Yarosh Jeannie Yarosh, 487 N. Cottage Road, Jackson Township, passed away at 1:15 p.m. Thursday (2-6-03) in her residence after an extended illness. She was 74. Obituary information was incomplete.
