Alice I. Silverthorn Former Sharon woman was Howland music teacher WARREN, Ohio -- Alice I. Silverthorn of 8435 Squirrel Hill, Howland Township, formerly of Sharon, passed away at 9 p.m. Friday, Feb., 21, 2003, in Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, following an extended illness. She was 73. Mrs. Silverthorn was born April 3, 1929, in North Vandergrift, Pa., a daughter of Michael E. and Mary Fishel Mazarick. She earned her bachelor of music degree from Youngstown State University in 1964 and her master of arts in performance in 1970 from Kent (Ohio) State University. Alice lived in Howland for the past 36 years and taught music in the Howland School System from 1963 to 1984. She was responsible for producing a variety of musical productions during her career at Howland High School. She was the choir director for East Side Church (Baptist-Disciples of Christ), Sharon, and Pleasant Valley Church in Niles, Ohio. She was the pianist for the Howland Rotary Club for many years and taught private piano and voice lessons for 40 years. She is survived by her husband, Robert R. Silverthorn, whom she married on Dec. 12, 1947 in Sharon. Other survivors include: a son, Charles, and his wife, Michael-Ann Silverthorn, Salineville, Ohio; a daughter, Mrs. Dan (Ellen) Moscaritolo, Chester, N.Y.; and four grandchildren, Ethan Silverthorn, Elissa Wilson, Crystal Oliver and Cheryl Oliver. The family requests material contributions be made to the Memorial Fund of East Side Church (Baptist-Disciples of Christ), 201 Spruce Ave., Sharon 16146.
James Keith Bair Hermitage man worked at United Steel Services James Keith Bair of 755 N. Darby Road in Hermitage, passed away at 3:54 p.m. Friday (2-21-03) in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a recent illness. He was 50. Mr. Bair was born March 15, 1952, in Sharon, a son of David and Theresa Short Bair. He attended Edinboro State College in Erie County. For 32 years, Jim worked at United Steel Services in Brookfield. He leaves: his wife, the former Judie A. Warner, whom he married on Aug. 14, 1976, at home. He also leaves his mother, Theresa Bair, Hermitage; as well as his brother, Frank A. Bair and his wife Karen, both also Hermitage; and three nephews, Justin Bair and Dominic and Andrew Warner. His father and grandparents preceded him in death. Memorial contributions may be made to Sharon Regional Health System's Hospice Home Care, 490 N. Kerrwood Drive, Suite 204, Hermitage 16148; or through the funeral home to the Library Fund of Hermitage Elementary School.
Hazel Foster Weaver Mercer woman retired from Grove City company Hazel Foster Weaver, 425 N. Pitt St., Mercer, died at 1 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in Countryside Convalescent Home, East Lackawannock Township, following an extended illness. She was 72. Mrs. Weaver was born May 22, 1930, in Leesburg Station, Springfield Township, to Samuel Covert Foster and Beulah Hanna Foster. She attended Leesburg School and graduated from Mercer High School as well as the former Shenango Valley Commercial Institute in Sharon. Mrs. Weaver retired after 25 years of employment with Satec Systems in Grove City and previously worked for Shenango Furnace/Penn Mold in Sharpsville. A homemaker, she was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Mercer and was an associate Girl Scout leader. She enjoyed bowling and traveled frequently. Her husband, Thomas John Weaver, whom she married Oct. 19, 1951, died on Jan. 30, 1974. Surviving are: three daughters, Diane Bissell Butterfield; and Judy, wife of Bernard Pyle, all Mercer; and Linda, wife of Thomas Combine, New Wilmington; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Mrs. Weaver was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Floyd and Earl Foster; and a sister, Helen Mellon.
Edna M. Speir Perry Township woman owned Speir Homes Inc. Edna M. Speir of 3413 Hadley Road, Perry Township, died at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 71. Mrs. Speir was born on Aug. 4, 1931, in Hadley, a daughter of the late Merle J. and Louise Beckdol McQuiston. On March 14, 1959, she married Maynard J. Speir, who preceded her in death on March 9, 1995. She was a member of Hillside Presbyterian Church, Greenville. Mrs. Speir owned and operated Speir Homes Inc. in Perry Township, which was founded by her husband in 1951. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, Hempfield Township; and the Ladies Auxiliary of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 276, Greenville. She is survived by: a son, James A. Speir and his wife Kathy, Hadley; a sister, Patricia Iliff and her husband Robert, Greenville; two brothers, William McQuiston and his wife Janeen, Meadville; and Larry McQuiston and his wife Virginia, Hadley; and two grandsons, Douglas and Gregory Speir, Hadley. Besides her husband, Mrs. Speir was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, 19 Jefferson Ave., Sharon 16146.
Russell 'Rusty' LeRoy Weaver S. Py man was printer, retired from Herald A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Russell "Rusty" Leroy Weaver, 4021 Wynwood Drive, South Pymatuning Township. He died at 7 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville, following an extended illness. He was 74. Mr. Weaver was born May 7, 1928, in Charleston, Ill., to Russell F. Weaver and Bertha I. Stewart Weaver. He graduated in 1946 from Penn High School in Greenville and worked for Greenville Steel Car; Erie Railroad; Greenville theaters; the former Kroger's grocery store, Greenville; and the former Beaver Printing for 10 years, where he learned the printing trade. He retired in 1991 from The Herald newspaper in Sharon, after 35 years as a printer. He was also co-owner of Weaver's Mailing and Printing. Mr. Weaver was a member of Lakeside Evangelical Congregational Church, Pymatuning Township. He was a Boy Scout, an Eagle Scout and an Explorer Scout, and then became a scout master and an Explorer advisor. He was also a Greenville Auxiliary Police sergeant; treasurer of the South Pymatuning Civic Association; an honorary member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union; and belonged to the CVA-ITU, a printer's union. Surviving are: his wife, the former Ivagene Horn, at home, whom he married on May 8, 1950; three sons, Roger K. and his wife Jennie Weaver, Transfer; Roy G. Weaver, Hermitage; and Randall I. and his wife Saundra Weaver, Pensacola, Fla.; a sister, Winfred Maxine Landfried, Greenville; three brothers, William C. Weaver, Sykesville, Pa.; Robert Weaver, Renton, Wash.; and Richard H. Weaver, Greenville; and two grandchildren, Jeremy and Charles R. Weaver. Mr. Weaver was preceded in death by his parents; on son, Russell D. Weaver; and one brother, Ronald S. Weaver.
Anna A. Jones Anna A. Jones, 275 Sterling Ave., Apartment 109, Sharon, died at 10 a.m. Saturday (2-22-03) in her home. She was 75. Obituary information was incomplete.
