George 'Laddie' Grande Farrell man was stores owner, ex-manager of band George "Laddie" Grande, 100 Shenango Blvd., Farrell, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, in his residence. He was 94. Mr. Grande was born May 6, 1908, in Farrell to Angelo Grande and Arcangelina Ricciardi Grande. In the 1930s, he owned a confectionery store on Roemer Boulevard in Farrell. In 1950, he operated a confectionery store and billiards parlor on Broadway Avenue in Farrell until it closed in 1977. Mr. Grande also operated a confectionery store on Sharpsville Avenue in Sharon from 1970 to 1977. He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Farrell and was a former manager of the Chick Farrell Band. He belonged to the Italian Home Club and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 55, both Farrell. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Mr. Grande was a licensed booker for the American Musicians Union. He was a 1926 graduate of Farrell High School. Since the 1920s, Mr. Grande followed sports in attendance, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates. His wife, the former Eleanor Corignani, whom he married May 11, 1940, survives at home. Also surviving are: a son, Gary and his wife Diane Grande, Milwaukee; a daughter, Sue and her husband Joe Carano, Hubbard; six grandchildren, Tony and Matthew Carano; Michael Grande, Khristina Tordik, Deanna Forsythe and Charisse Bieniek; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Dillon, Farrell. Mr. Grande was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers, Frank, Mike, Michael, Sam, Bates, Joe, Albert and Anthony Grande; and four sisters, Alice Morocco, Armalinda Morocco, Mary Grande and Mary Grande.
GRANDE Mildred Edith Kelm Fischer U.S. Steel retiree had son living in Grove City MOUNT LEBANON -- Mildred Edith Kelm Fischer, Mount Lebanon, formerly of Bethel Park, died at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2003, in Asbury Heights Nursing Home. She was 81. Mrs. Fischer was born Nov. 10, 1921, in Glendale to Nicholas Jules Egbert and Blanche Agnes Oliver Egbert. She was an alumna of Wilkinsburg High School Class of 1940 and a member of the National Honor Society, having graduated with high honors. Following high school, Mrs. Fischer attended various business schools. She retired from U.S. Steel Corp. in 1980, having worked in the U.S. Steel building in Pittsburgh for more than 25 years as a stenographer. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church of Bethel Park. Her husband, George Fischer Jr., whom she married Dec. 11, 1946, is deceased. Surviving are: a son, George Alan Fischer and his wife Barbara Adams Fischer, Grove City; and two grandchildren, Matthew David Fischer, Grove City; and Mrs. Jerzy (Mary Elizabeth) Smiecinski, Pozan, Poland. Besides her husband, Mrs. Fischer was preceded in death by her parents; a stepfather who raised her, Carl Kelm; and one sister, Florence LaVerne Mascellino.

Thelma 'Mitzie' Mitchell Ex-Hermitage homemaker belonged to club, church TAMPA, Fla. -- A funeral service will be held Thursday for Thelma "Mitzie" Mitchell, 4851 Gandy Blvd., No. 16 Canal Drive, Tampa, formerly of Hermitage. She died at 4 a.m. Sunday (3-2-03) in her residence. She was 78. Mrs. Mitchell was born Dec. 4, 1924, in Pittsburgh to Raymond D. Kitchen and Thelma Rena Coffman Kitchen. A homemaker, she was a member of the Women's Club of Hickory Township, now Hermitage; Hickory Women's Golf League; and the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a charitable organization in Tampa. She also belonged to Hickory United Methodist Church in Hermitage. As a member of Regency Cove Church in Tampa, she belonged to the choir and the church golf league. Her husband, George F. Mitchell Jr., whom she married June 5, 1948, survives at the residence in Florida. Also surviving are: a daughter, Barbara Rosche and her husband Robert, Madisonville, Ky.; and two grandsons, George Robert Rosche and Geoffrey Alan Rosche. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Frederick J. Greene Shenango Twp. man, WWII vet was Sharon Steel retiree Frederick J. Greene, 3377 Hubbard-West Middlesex Road, Shenango Township, died at 12:41 a.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 82. Mr. Greene was born July 17, 1920, in Sharon to Frederick E. Greene and Lois Cassidy Greene. An Army veteran, he served during World War II in Central Europe where he was a medic and later a non-commissioned officer, having served in the Motor Transportation Unit. During his tenure, he achieved a rank of staff sergeant. Mr. Greene retired in 1977 from the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant and was one of 60 subjects painted by Norman Rockwell at the plant. He was a lifelong area resident and was affiliated with St. John's Episcopal Church in Sharon. He was a well-respected mechanic who could fix just about anything. He loved reading Western novels. His wife, the former Alice Jane Rodecker, whom he married June 21, 1941, survives at the residence. Also surviving are: one son, Frederick J. Greene and his wife Irene, San Rafael, Calif.; two daughters, Margaret Ann Moran and her husband Robert, Seoul, South Korea; and Marilyn S. Woods and her husband William A., Hubbard; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Greene was preceded in death by his parents. GREENE Mary B. Mullen Eastern Star member was formerly of Brookfield MESA, Ariz. -- Mary B. Mullen of 8700 University Drive No. 1031, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Brookfield Township, died at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday (2-26-03) in Springdale Village East Care Center. She was 93. Mrs. Mullen was born Nov. 11, 1909, in Indianapolis, Ind., a daughter of Austin M. and L. Clyde Hook Shaw. She was a homemaker and had attended Brookfield United Methodist Church. Mrs. Mullen was a member for more than 50 years of Order of the Eastern Star, having been a past worthy matron of the Eastern Star in 1968. She also served as a past secretary for a term of eight years. Survivors include; a son, Robert E. Mullen, Mesa; a sister, Georgia Hazel Kelly, Indianapolis; a half brother, Clarence Rosell, Kanub, Utah; and nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William A. Mullen, who died in 1974; a son, William Mullen Jr.; and three sisters and a half brother.
MULLEN Verna Mikota Verna Mikota, Pullam Drive, West Middlesex, died at 11:40 a.m. Monday (3-3-03) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 82. Obituary information was incomplete.
MIKOTA Carol Ann Holman Stephan Family business co-owner was stained-glass artist Carol Ann Holman Stephan of Delaware Township passed away at 10:15 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2003, surrounded by her family in her home on North River Road following a two-month illness. She was 56. Carol was born May 25, 1946, in Sharon, a daughter of Edward Holman and Dorothy Turner Holman. She was an alumna of Mercer High School and Robert Morris College in Pittsburgh where she earned an associate's degree in secretarial science. Carol was a Christian. She and her husband, Fred, founded Big Bend Wood and Glass in Delaware Township in 1988. Together, they cut timber and milled lumber and laid stone for their home overlooking the Shenango River. Together they restored and reproduced period furniture. They helped to restore historic local buildings and churches. Working side by side they handcrafted doors and windows and cabinetry for residences and businesses. Carol's artistry in stained glass decorates churches, homes and businesses in several states. Carol's joyful style of living her life and her love of fun and laughter were the delight of her family and many friends. She and Fred traveled extensively and she loved taking weekend trips with her mother and sister. Her husband, Fred Stephan, whom she married June 17, 1967, survives at the residence. She is also survived by: her son, Eric Stephan, Delaware Township; her mother, Dorothy Holman; and her sister, Karen, wife of Ron Parnell, all Mercer. Carol was preceded in death by her father.
