Mary Dyko Hornyak, who lived with her daughter at 3764 Tiffany Lane, Hermitage, but formerly lived on Pennsylvania Avenue in Farrell, died at 2:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in her daughter's home after an extended illness. She was 85.

Mrs. Hornyak was born Nov. 23, 1917, in Sharon to Peter Dyko and Julia Parcetich Dyko.

She attended Mercer area schools.

A homemaker, Mrs. Hornyak was a member of St. Ann's Church in Farrell and its Altar Society.

She enjoyed needle crafts, cooking, baking and playing the piano by ear.

Her husband, Peter M. Hornyak, whom she married Oct. 30, 1937, died Feb. 16, 1999.

Surviving are: her daughter, Martha Jane Lindstedt, at home; two grandchildren, Sean Lindstedt, Edinboro; and Erin Lindstedt Pierce, Atlanta; and three great-grandchildren, Michael James Lindstedt, Liana Rose Pierce and David Jesse Pierce.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Hornyak was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, John Dyko.

Helena Zieminick

Hermitage woman belonged to Sts. Peter & Paul church

Helena Zieminick, 476 N. Neshannock Road, formerly of North Buhl Farm Drive, both Hermitage, passed away at 9:05 p.m. Monday (3-3-03) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System of natural causes after an extended illness. She was 87.

Mrs. Zieminick was born June 29, 1915, in Sharon, a daughter of John Balko and Katherine Hilko Balko.

She attended Patagonia school and, prior to her marriage, was employed at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

Mrs. Zieminick was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sharon. She also belonged to Patagonia Civic League.

Her husband, Walter P. Zieminick, whom she married July 10, 1937, passed away Oct. 13, 1991.

Surviving are: one daughter, Mrs. Ben F. (Kathy) Lealy, Hermitage; three brothers, John Balko, Hermitage; Paul Balko, Sharpsville; and Albert Balko and his wife Jean, Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandchildren, Todd Lealy, Umatilla, Fla.; and Lisa Lealy, Hermitage; and a niece and nephew of whom she was particularly fond, Dorothy Paulsen and Andrew Balko.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Zieminick was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Anna Balko Emery; and two brothers, Joseph and Andrew Balko.

Frederick Lowe 'Tony' Beck Jr.

Sharon native, Korean War vet had sister living here

LEESBURG, Va. -- Frederick "Lowe" Tony Beck Jr., Waterford, formerly of Sharon, died on Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, in Loudoun Hospital. He was 74.

Mr. Beck was born on May 29, 1928, in Sharon, the son of the late Frederick and Florence Broad Beck.

After attending Sharon High School, he worked for Bell Telephone until entering the U.S. Navy in 1952. He was stationed in Guam from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean conflict.

From 1955 to 1988, he worked for Armstrong Cork Co. while living in Erie, Waterford and Williamsville, N.Y., then to Grosse Pointe, Mich. Upon his retirement in 1988, he moved back to Waterford.

Mr. Beck served as a deacon in the Presbyterian Church of Grosse Pointe and enjoyed sailing, camping with his family and attending band and orchestra concerts in which his daughters performed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lynette Lucille Lane Beck, whom he married July 27, 1957. She died Feb. 6, 2002.

Survivors include: two daughters, Dr. Cynthia L. Beck, Hamilton, Va.; and Stephanie Beck Condon and her husband Jeffrey, Grand Rapids, Mich.; a sister, Mary Jane Lloyd, Hermitage; and two grandchildren, Isabel Grace and Maxwell Aron Condon.

Rose C. Flagnelli Rococi

Homemaker, Farrell school retiree was Fatima member

Rose C. Flagnelli Rococi of 605 Park Ave., Farrell, died at 8 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown, of natural causes. She was 88.

Mrs. Rococi was born March 26, 1914, in Farrell to Angelo Flagnelli and Carmella Salverino Flagnelli.

A homemaker, Rose was retired from Farrell Area School District, where she worked in the cafeteria.

As a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, she belonged to its Altar-Rosary Society; the church's cavatelli workers; and in the past, worked with the church's wedding catering group. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels.

She married Joseph Rococi on Aug. 2, 1930, at the former St. Anthony's Church in Farrell. He died Dec. 20, 1953.

Surviving are: two sons, Joseph Rococi and his wife, Marla, Hermitage; and Richard Rococi Sr. and his wife, Judith, Conneaut, Ohio; two brothers, Richard Funelli and Ernest Flagnelli, both Farrell; a sister, Josephine Ryan, Hermitage; a daughter-in-law, Gertrude Rococi, South Pymatuning Township; six grandchildren, Rachel Shearer, Ruth Ann Laird, Jon Rococi, Danielle Rococi, Richard Rococi and Jill Rococi; and two great-grandchildren, MacKenzie Shearer and Emily Laird.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Albert Rococi; a grandson, Joseph R. Rococi; and two brothers, James and Thomas Flagnelli.

John Hilko

WWII Army vet of Sharon retired from Westinghouse

John Hilko of 445 Morton St., Sharon, died Tuesday morning (3-4-03) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 76.

Mr. Hilko was born Feb. 26, 1927, in Sharon, a son of Andrew and Anna Kubizna Hilko.

A 1945 alumnus of Sharon High School, he graduated in 1951 from Marietta (Ohio) College, where he earned a degree in chemistry.

He retired as a senior materials engineer from Westinghouse Electric Corp., having served the company for 37 years.

As a U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Hilko served with the Signal Corps during World War II.

He was a member of American Legion Post 299; and American Carpatho-Russian Citizens and Social Club, both Sharon.

He was a former member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Athens, Ga., and most recently attended Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hermitage.

Mr. Hilko is survived by: two brothers, Joseph A. Hilko and his wife Irene, Sharon; and William P. Hilko and his wife Joan, Sharpsville; three nephews, Paul, David and William Hilko; and a niece, Linda Hilko.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Andrew Hilko.

Mary L. Matika

Homemaker was active

in Farrell church group

SUN CITY WEST, Ariz. -- Mary L. Matika of Sun City, formerly of the Shenango Valley, died of pneumonia at 8 a.m. (MT) Monday, March 3, 2003, in Del Webb Memorial Hospital. She was 87.

Mrs. Matika was born Aug. 12, 1915, in Sharon, a daughter of Michael Goga and Anna Karch Goga.

With her husband, she was a member of St. Ann's Church in Farrell, serving actively with the church Altar Society.

Mrs. Matika was a homemaker.

Her husband of 67 years, John G. Matika, whom she married Aug. 10, 1935, survives at the residence in Sun City.

Also surviving are: one daughter, Carol E. Best, Harrogate, England; one son, Ronald J. Matika, San Diego; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and her sister, Julie Welch, Sharon.

Mrs. Matika was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Anne Brancovich; and one brother, Michael Goga.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, in St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church, 15800 Del Webb Blvd., Sun City.


Verna Barbour Mikota
WM church member was hospital worker, volunteer

A funeral service will be held Thursday for Verna Barbour Mikota, 28 Pullam Drive, West Middlesex. She died at 11:40 a.m. Monday morning, March 3, 2003, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a short illness. She was 82.

Mrs. Mikota was born Aug. 1, 1920, in Masury to David Stewart Barbour and Ella Barker Phillips Barbour.

A 1938 alumna of Brookfield High School, she was her senior class salutatorian and, following graduation, was employed at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

Mrs. Mikota then worked as a clerk at Quaker Cleaners, Sharon. She later worked in the housekeeping department of Sharon Regional Health System, retiring after 10 years of service. After retirement, she was a volunteer for more than 20 years at the front desk of the hospital.

Mrs. Mikota was a member of the Junior Women's Club of Sharon; the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; and the Madaline Gilbert Tent No. 23 for more than 50 years.

As an active member of West Middlesex United Methodist Church since joining on Sept. 7, 1958, she was church treasurer; a relief counter for the collection; secretary to the Ready, Willing and Able organization of the church; and a faithful member of the Builders Sunday School Class.

On Saturdays, she enjoyed watching her grandchildren bowl, later treating them to lunch. Mrs. Mikota also took her grandchildren to Sunday school.

She was a leader for Girl Scouts of America; and belonged to AARP Chapter 3616, a retired person's organization.

Her husband, John Mikota, whom she married May 27, 1950, survives at the residence.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Wanda J. Hicklin and her husband Herbert; and Lois Tarary and her husband Charles, all Hermitage; two grandchildren, Annette and Pamela Tarary; four stepgrandchildren, David, Dorothy, Susan and Linda Hicklin; and three stepgreat-grandchildren, Joseph Hicklin, Jeffrey Fair and Shannon O'Brien.

Mrs. Mikota was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Lauren Edward Phillips; and two sisters, Teressa Louise Kettering and Wilda June Neiman.

Boyd W. Evans

Ex-Masury man retired

from West Middlesex mill

Boyd W. Evans of Hermitage, formerly of Masury, died at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday (3-4-03) at Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage. He was 89.

Mr. Evans was born July 26, 1913, in Osterburg, Pa., a son of John H. and Jenny Anderson Evans.

Boyd was a press operator for Phillips Steel in West Middlesex for 12 years prior to retiring.

He was a former member of Faith Assembly of God in Masury.

His wife, the former Jessie E. Crowe, whom he married Aug. 12, 1933, died April 16, 1999.

Survivors include: one son, Richard E. Evans, Frankfort, Ky.; two daughters, Joyce L. Bilunka, Hermitage; and Cheryl A. Yendrek, Brookfield; one brother, Paul Evans, LaVale, Md.; and 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Evans was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.

Greenville homemaker was Hempfield church member

Marie Ruhlman, 14 Brockway Ave., Greenville, died at 1:29 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2003, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. She was 87.

Mrs. Ruhlman was born March 25, 1915, in Salem Township to Orlo A. Sweny and Elma Cannon Sweny.

A homemaker, she attended Greenville Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Hempfield Township. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and baking.

Her husband, Ivan W. Ruhlman, whom she married Jan. 13, 1938, died Dec. 17, 1999.

Surviving are: two sons, Lawrence W. Ruhlman and his wife Barbara, Erie; and William R. Ruhlman and his wife Lovie Dee, Greenville; one sister, Bernice Pringle, Greenville; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Ruhlman was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Erma Weaver.
