Helen L. Ankrom
Woman enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and animals

Helen L. Ankrom, 234 Joshua Drive, Brookfield, formerly of Bethel Park, Pa., died Friday evening, March 7, 2003, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 80.

Mrs. Ankrom was born July 9, 1922, in Columbus, Ohio, to Edward E. Fraley and Louise W. Smiley Fraley.

Mrs. Ankrom had lived in Brookfield since 1996.

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and other needlework. Mrs. Ankrom also enjoyed animals, especially her dog, Middy.

She married Howard W. Ankrom Jr. on Dec. 20, 1947. She was preceded in death by him on July 5, 1997.

Surviving are: a brother, Edward "Bud" Fraley, Brookfield; a sister, Betty Clarke, Columbus, Ohio; a niece, Helen Clarke, also Columbus; and four nephews, Howard A. Fraley, Kinsman; Edward S. Miller, Niles, Ohio; Robert Heflick, Sharon; and John Heflick, Fowler, Ohio.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Ankrom was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Smith; a brother, John Fraley; and a nephew, Richard Shannon.

Memorial contributions may be made to Animal Rescue League, 6620 Hamilton Ave., Pittsburgh, Pa.

Catherine Phillips Evans

CEO's widow was active

in church, community life

A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Catherine Phillips Evans, formerly of 3640 Mount Hickory Blvd., Hermitage, and currently residing at 506 Brookfield Ave., Masury. She died at 2:25 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 89.

Mrs. Evans was born Dec. 28, 1913, in Sharon, a daughter of the late George and Catherine Griffith Phillips.

Mrs. Evans was an active and lifetime member of First Baptist Church in Sharon.

She graduated from Sharon High School in 1931 and had been employed as the chief telephone operator for Strouss' department store in Youngstown for 18 years.

On Sept. 23, 1929, she married Henry G. Evans who was former chief executive officer of the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant. He died on Jan. 1, 2000.

She was a past president of the Sharon General Hospital Auxiliary, Unit I, and was recognized as a life member of the auxiliary.

He civic leadership was also noted as a life member of Mercer County Crippled Children's Society, now known as Mercer County Children's Aid.

She enjoyed the outdoors and was a member of Sharon Country Club, Greenville Country Club, Youngstown Country Club, as well as the Iroquois Club of Conneaut Lake and the Youngstown Club.

Surviving are: four nieces, Mrs. Reese (Shirley) Jones, Brookfield; Mrs. Frank (Faith) Kachaylo, Sharon; Mrs. James (Beverly) Forsythe, Hermitage; and Mrs. Robert (Carole) McMasters, Newton Falls, Ohio; and five nephews, John "Jack" W. Bingham and his wife Mary Jane, Hermitage; James C. Phillips, Fort Myers, Fla.; Harvey "Buck" Phillips and his wife Gail, Chapin, S.C.; Donald "Butch" Wiseman and his wife Gail, Cranberry Township; and Dr. Paul Bodamer and his wife Barbara, Darien, Ga. She is also survived by several great-nieces and -nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Cecil, Reese and Harvey Phillips.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to West Hill Ministries in care of First Baptist Church, 301 W. State St., Sharon 16146.

David Lee Hughes

Former Farrell man worked at U.S. base

FRANKFORT, Germany -- A funeral service will be held Wednesday for David Lee Hughes, 22 Maizer St., Weiterstadt, Germany, formerly of Farrell. He passed away at 2:30 a.m. Feb. 28, 2003, in Kotes Kreuc Krankenhaus, Frankfort. He was 64.

Mr. Hughes was born June 20, 1938, in Cheraw, S.C., to David Hughes Jr. and Ellen Ford Hughes.

A Farrell High School graduate, he was employed at Rhein Main Air Base in Frankfort, where he was a longtime meat cutter. He retired in 1994, having earned a certificate on May 28, 1989, in recognition of 30 years of service for the U.S. government.

Mr. Hughes was a member of Rose Chapel at Rhein Main Air Base.

A U.S. Army and Air Force veteran, he served for 15 years in the military police; in the Vietnam conflict; and in an extended term of service overseas.

His wife, the former Kea Pun, survives in South Korea.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Eleanor Riley, Weiterstadt; and Denise Riley, Darmstadt, Germany; one son, David Riley, Weiterstadt; his mother, Ellen Hughes, Farrell; four sisters, Ella Mae Hargrette; Mary Ellen Harris and her husband Herman, all Farrell; Roberta Sellers and her husband, Minister Jimmie Sellers, Warren, Ohio; and Judy Diane Hughes, also Farrell; four brothers, Wilbert Hughes and his wife Shirley D., Youngstown; and Robert Hughes, Albert Hughes and Lawrence Hughes and his wife Tracey, all Farrell; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his father, David Hughes Jr.

BRUNSWICK, Ohio -- Fred Hurd, Brunswick, formerly of Sharon, died Saturday morning (3-8-03) in Brunswick. He was 96.

Jennifer N. Snyder

Hubbard High honors grad was studying psychology

Jennifer N. Snyder of Hubbard, died Thursday afternoon, March 6, 2003, from injuries sustained in an auto accident in Shenango Township. She was 18.

Jennifer was born March 30, 1984, in Youngstown, a daughter of Donald and Marcie Garner Snyder.

She was a lifelong Hubbard resident.

Miss Snyder worked for Wal-Mart in Hermitage and was a freshman at Westminster College, New Wilmington, majoring in child psychology.

She was a member of Hubbard (Township) Church of the Nazarene, where she was an assistant Sunday school teacher.

She graduated with honors from Hubbard High School in 2002.

Jennifer enjoyed Roller Blading, shopping, music, photography and watching movies.

She leaves: her parents, Donald and Marcie Snyder; two brothers, Brian and Cory Snyder, all Hubbard; her grandparents, Tom and Pat Dillon, Hollywood, Fla.; and Bob and Velma Snyder, also Hubbard; her great-grandmothers, Margaret Nicastro, Sharon; and Pearl Snyder, New Bethlehem, Pa.; her fiancee, Brandon Wood, Hubbard; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was preceded in death by an uncle, Daniel Dillon; and a cousin, Donna Mitchell.

Alice L. Bennett Spohn

Alice L. Bennett Spohn, Hermitage, formerly of Connelly Manor, Sharon, died at 3 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2003, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, following an extended illness. She was 89.

Mrs. Spohn was born Dec. 19, 1913, in Black Lick, Pa., to James D. Bennett and Mary L. Campbell Bennett.

She retired in 1957 after 12 years as a clerk for Reichards Grocery Store. She previously owned Alice's Yarn Shop on Main Street in Sharpsville.

Mrs. Spohn was a 50-year member of First United Methodist Church in Sharpsville.

She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, baking, cooking and being with her grandchildren.

Her husband, Nathaniel H. Spohn, whom she married Dec. 10, 1935, died Feb. 7, 1972.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Barbara L. Spohn) Cutler, Sharpsville; a sister, Eliza Diefenderfer, Sharon; and two grandchildren, Mrs. Richard (Tamhra Cutler) Sakony, Sharpsville; and Richard S. Cutler and his wife Donna, Hartstown; and two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Dustin Sakony.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Spohn was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Blanche Shaffer and Maude Long; and one brother, Hilbert Bennett.

Andrew F. Sudzina

Andrew F. Sudzina, Cordia Commons at Shenango Inn, Sharon, formerly of Pine Hollow Boulevard, Hermitage, died of natural causes at 12:40 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2003, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell, after an extended illness. He was 89.

Mr. Sudzina was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Farrell to Michael Sudzina and Anna Kolibas Sudzina.

A graduate of Farrell High School, he was an engineer for 30 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. In his adult life, Andy was certified from Pennsylvania State University under the Engineering, Science and Management Defense Training Program in engineering and drafting.

As a member of St. Ann's Church, Farrell, he belonged to the church choir. He was a also a member of the Shenango Valley Senior Citizens Center, Hermitage; and the Slovak Catholic Sokol, Farrell.

He was very mechanically inclined and built his own home in Hermitage.

In his youth, Andy played baseball for the Spearman Avenue Pirates, a former semi-pro team in Farrell. He was inducted into Mercer County Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.

His wife, the former Vera E. Grega, whom he married on Feb. 8, 1941, died on March 24, 1999.

Surviving are: a daughter, Barbara Lallo, wife of William, Austintown, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Kelly May, wife of Elden, Flatwoods, Ky.

Besides his wife, Mr. Sudzina was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ronald Sudzina; three brothers, John, Michael and George Sudzina; and three sisters, Mary Andriyo, Anna Goda and Susanne Zager.

Lorraine Fulkerson Venable

native, Eastern Star member

WARREN, Ohio -- Lorraine Fulkerson Venable, Fountain Valley, Calif., formerly of Vienna, died at 1:10 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2003, in the Community Skilled Care Center in Warren. She was 83.

Mrs. Venable was born Jan. 3, 1920, in Harrisburg, Pa., to Samuel Fulkerson and Lyle Elizabeth Santy Fulkerson.

A homemaker, she enjoyed cooking and needlework. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and a former member of the Methodist Church of Vienna.

Mrs. Venable lived in Vienna until 1959, then moved to Fountain Valley, Orange County.

Her husband, Harry Burton Venable, whom she married April 10, 1939, preceded her in death on Jan. 15, 1990.

Surviving are: a daughter, Carolyn Hurwitz and her husband Jerry, Moren Valley, Calif.; a brother, Joseph Fulkerson, Idaho; three grandsons, Michael Anthony Granado, Frederick Burton Granado and James Patrick Granado; a granddaughter, Michelle Marie Granado; and six great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Venable was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert Fulkerson; and three sisters, Jean Brown, Malissa Skrobut and Evelyn Green.
