Roscoe Gravatt

Clarks Mills man was former mechanic at Hodge

Roscoe Gravatt, 146 Gravatt Road, Clarks Mills, died Tuesday evening (8-5-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Greenville. He was 83.

Mr. Gravatt was born Nov. 4, 1913, in Clarks Mills to Earnest and Eliza Crapp Gravatt.

A mechanic, he worked 25 years in the maintenance department of Hodge Foundry division of Svedela Industries, Hempfield Township.

Mr. Gravatt was a member of Clarks Mills United Methodist Church.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Dorothy L. Roberts, at home; a son, Wally, Greenville; a daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Debby) Grinnell, Sandy Lake; and a sister, Mandy Snyder, Slippery Rock.

He was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.


GRAVATT

Roscoe, 83, of 146 Gravatt Road, Clarks Mills.

Lyle M. Horne

Lifelong farmer was retired auditor from state office

Lyle N. Horne, 11690 E. Gelvin Road, East Fallowfield Township, Crawford County, died at 9:35 p.m. Tuesday (8-5-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Greenville. He was 87.

Mr. Horne was born Nov. 28, 1909, in East Fallowfield Township to John Milton and Claudia Miller Horne.

He was a lifelong farmer. He retired in 1975 after 20 years as an auditor in the state Auditor General's office.

Mr. Horne was a Protestant.

He was a member for more than 65 years of Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge 1128, Atlantic.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Mariam C. Coulter, whom he married Oct. 8, 1932; three sons, L. Wade, Gary L. and Arlan D., all Atlantic; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Vere; and two sisters, Mildred Osborn and Melva Whitmore.


HORNE

Lyle M., 87, of 11690 E. Gelvin Road, East Fallowfield Township, Crawford County.

James Crutchfield Marshall

GE engineer designed missile guidance systems

NEW CASTLE _ Private funeral will be Monday for James Crutchfield Marshall, Mill Road, Wilmington Township, formerly of Youngstown. He died at 9 p.m. Tuesday (8-5-97) in the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle, after an extended illness. He was 69.

Mr. Marshall was born Jan. 12, 1928, in Gary, Ind., to Edward C. and Margaret Snow Marshall.

He graduated from Randolph-Macon Academy, Front Royal, Va., and earned a bachelor's degree in 1950 from Case Institute of Technology, Cleveland.

From 1950-52, he achieved the rank of master sergeant in the Army Corps of Engineers in Germany.

Mr. Marshall was a defense electronics engineer for more than 20 years at General Electric Corp., Syracuse, N.Y., designing missile-guidance systems. He conducted research and design in its electronics laboratory, focusing on electro-optical tracking and communications.

He moved to New Wilmington, where he founded Optok Laboratories, which offered broadcast engineering and consulting services.

An amateur radio operator, he used the ham radio call sign ``W3HLF.''

Mr. Marshall was an avid gardener and birdwatcher who enjoyed working on various mechanical projects.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Margaret A. ``Peg'' McLaughry, whom he married Oct. 27, 1962; a son, William S. ``Newt,'' Erie; a daughter, Mrs. Michael (Laury Anne) Parramore, Edgewater, Md.; and a sister, Jean Marshall, Santa Barbara, Calif.

Dorothy A. Shaver

Retired teacher was member of groups, active in church

Funeral will be Friday for Dorothy A. Shaver, Shenango Inn Personal Care Residence, Sharon, formerly of 1224 Glenwood Drive, Sharon. She died at 2:30 p.m. Monday (8-4-97) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 87.

Mrs. Shaver was born Aug. 25, 1909, in DuBois, Pa., to J. Blaine and Kathryn McKinley Alcorn.

She graduated from Brookville (Pa.) High School and Clarion University.

She retired in 1971 as a teacher from Wengler Elementary School after 22 years with Sharon School District.

Mrs. Shaver was a charter member and first president of the Lioness Club, Sharon.

She belonged to Pennsylvania State Education Association; White Shrine of Jerusalem Shrine 8, Sharon; Rebekah Commandry 50, Knights Templar Auxiliary, Sharon; and Daughters of the American Revolution, Sharon, who awarded her its Valley Forge Teacher's Medal in 1971.

Mrs. Shaver was a member of Shenango Valley Business and Professional Women's Club, Sharon, and was ``Woman of the Year'' in 1975.

She was an active member and deacon of First Presbyterian Church, Sharon, and belonged to its Mariner's class.

Her husband, Allen M. Shaver, whom she married July 30, 1934, died Oct. 23, 1980.

Surviving are: a son, Fred A., Weymouth, Mass.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick A. Alcorn.

Contributions may be made to the memorial fund of First Presbyterian Church, 600 E. State St., Sharon 16146.

Mrs. Allen M. (Dorothy A.), 87, Sharon, formerly of 1224 Glenwood Drive.

Paul Louis Tillia

Former Volant man was iron worker in Mont., Mo.

TIGARD, Ore. _ Paul Louis Tillia, 14335 S.W. 164th Ave., formerly of Main Street, Volant, died at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday (8-6-97) in King City Rehabilitation and Living Center after a brief illness. He was 91.

Mr. Tillia was born Nov. 17, 1905, in Wampum, Pa., to Louis and Ruby Tillia.

He was an iron worker in Montana and Missouri.

Mr. Tillia was a member of The Christian Church, Chewton, Pa.

He belonged to Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 243, New Castle.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Margaret A. Allen, whom he married July 24, 1929; two sons, Frank, Tigard; and John, DeBary, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Welsh, Laguna Beach, Calif.; a brother, C.A., Dewey, Ariz.; two grandchildren; two stepgranddaughters; four great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Hazel Walters.

Paul Louis, 91, of 14335 S.W. 164th Ave., Tigard, Ore., formerly of Main Street, Volant.

Robert T. Travis

Cooper retiree, sportsman, woodworker served in WWII

Robert T. Travis, 60 W. Glenora Drive, Grove City, died at 4:35 p.m. Wednesday (8-6-97) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township, after an extended illness. He was 71.

Mr. Travis was born Sept. 20, 1925, in New Bethlehem, Pa., to Theodore O. and Annie Ethel Black Travis.

An Army veteran, he served during World War II in France and Germany.

He retired in 1990 after 25 years as an assembler from Cooper Cameron Corp., Grove City.

Mr. Travis was a member of First Church of God, Grove City.

He was an avid fisherman, hunter and woodworker.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Jessie Erma Foust, whom he married July 27, 1950; three daughters, Mrs. Phillip E. (Debra Ann) Fleming, Mrs. Terry D. (Sharon Elaine) Fleming and Mrs. John A. (Bonnie Sue) Micco, all Grove City; five sisters, Mrs. Lewis (Phoebe) Stuart, Randolph, N.Y.; Mrs. Stan (Louise) Rohrig, Ashtabula, Ohio; Mrs. Gene (Marie) Callender, Parker; Mrs. Thomas (Ruth) Himes, Mercer; and Mrs. Robert (Lorraine) McPeak, Harrisville; two brothers, William, Grove City; and Frederick, Harrisville; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robert ``Robbie'' Allen, and a brother, David E.
