Joanne Kathryn Baker

Animal lover worked at several area restaurants

Joanne Kathryn Baker, 579 Charleston Road, Sharpsville, died at 10:07 p.m. Saturday (8-16-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Shenango Valley, Farell.

Mrs. Baker was born in Masury to John P. and Laverne H. Jones Argenson.

She attended Sharon schools and worked for the Villa Arena Restaurant, Farrell; Oak Tree Country Club and the Treasure Cove, formerly Metzer's.

An animal lover, Mrs. Baker supported the Humane Society of Mercer County.

Surviving are: her husband, Kenneth H.; two sons, Raymond Meeks of Pulaski and James Meeks of Sharon; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Rosemary) Reese, of Newman, Ga. and Mrs. Michael (Linda) Pascutzz of New Wilmington; two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Frye and Katherine Argenson, both of Masury; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, John, and one sister.


Stephen P. Bassick

Was retired foreman from Sharpsville Steel

Stephen P. Bassick of 86 Goetsch Road, Sugar Grove Township, died Sunday (8-17-97) in St. Paul Homes, 339 E. Jamestown Road, West Salem Township. He was 94.

Mr. Bassick was born May 27, 1903, in Homestead, Pa., to Peter and Anna Basscik.

He retired as a foreman from the former Sharpsville Steel Fabricators. He also worked for the former C.B. & I. Company, Greenville.

He was a member of St. Michael's Church and the Knights of Columbus, Third Degree, both in Greenville.

Surviving are: his wife, Grace Albertson, whom he married Nov. 22, 1949; a daughter, Mary Anne Johnston, Chautuaqua, N.Y.; a son, Joseph Bassick, Greenville; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Bielobocky, Greenville; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Peter Bassick; and three sisters, Maggie Yesko, Julia Yinski and Rose Bassick.

Ralph C. Callahan Sr.

Greenville man was retired patrolman of B&LE Railroad

Funeral will be Wednesday for Ralph C. Callahan Sr., 69 Plum St., Greenville. He died Saturday (8-16-97) in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township. He was 85.

Mr. Callahan was born Jan. 1, 1912, in Grove City to Harry and Anna Bryson Eakin. His adoptive parents were Charles K. and Elvira Eakin Callahan.

In 1975, he retired as a patrolman from the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad Co., Greenville.

He was a member of Christian Missionary Alliance Church, Greenville, where he served as an elder.

Mr. Callahan was a member of Veterans Employee Association of Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Twila J. Vanderslice, whom he married Nov. 1, 1932; four sons, Jack E., Lower Burkell, Pa.; Charles K., Orange, Calif.; and Ronald K. and Robert J., both Greenville; a daughter, Mrs. James (Lillian) Schierberl, Garden Grove, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Howard (Esther) Kamerer, Greenville; Mrs. Dan (Nannie) Young, Slippery Rock; Shirley Draper, Keystone Heights, Fla.; and Mrs. Gus (Betty Lou) Papas, New Wilmington; a brother, James Thompson, Slippery Rock; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph C. Callahan Jr.; a brother, James Eakin; and a sister, Harriett Edgar.

Nicholas Chirikas, 31 E. Paul St., Shenango Township, was pronounced dead on arrival at 6:15 p.m. Sunday (8-17-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Shenango Valley, Farrell, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was 19.

Alma L. Congdon

Masury woman belonged to United Methodist Church

Alma L. Congdon, 7872 First St., Masury, died at 10:20 a.m. Sunday (8-17-97) in O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home, Masury. She was 73.

Mrs. Congdon was born Oct. 9, 1923, in Hubbard to Peter Jacob and Flora Hadlock Ladig.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Masury United Methodist Church, and its. O.M.U.

Mrs. Congdon belonged to the Tuesday Earlybird Bowling League, Thornton Hall, Sharon; and St. John's League.

She was an avid bingo player.

Her husband, William E. Congdon, whom she married Aug. 21, 1940, died Sept. 7, 1990.

Surviving are: three sons, William Jr., with whom she lived; David, Cape Coral, Fla.; and Thomas, Reading, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. James (Anna Mae) Wolfe, East Greenwich, R.I.; and four grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

ORLANDO, Fla. _ Jay Timothy Cook, Orlando, formerly of Grove City, died Aug. 2, 1997, of natural causes after a brief illness while visiting relatives in Sumter, S.C. He was 45.

Mr. Cook was born Sept. 18, 1951, in Grove City to J. Frank and Alice Orr Cook.

He was a 1969 graduate of Grove City High School and was an alumnus of Kentucky Wesleyan University, Owensboro, Ky.

Mr. Cook was a carpenter at Pierce Carpentry and Construction, Orlando.

He formerly attended Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City.

Surviving are: a son, J. Frank, Orlando; a sister, Mrs. Kent (Jill) Bixler, Fort Wayne, Ind.; and a brother, Tod Raymond, Grove City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a stepdaughter, Nicole Vivian McMillan.

D. Clyde Jewell

Retired as inspector for Westinghouse after 37 years

D. Clyde Jewell, White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township, formerly of 1747 Bend Road, Jefferson Township, died at 11:56 a.m. Sunday (8-17-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Greenville, after an extended illness. He was 93.

Mr. Jewell was born June 24, 1904, in Jefferson Township to Marion and Vicie Snyder Jewell.

He was a graduate of Mercer High School.

Retiring in 1969, he was an inspector for 37 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., Sharon. He was a self-employed coal deliverer and sold firewood locally.

Mr. Jewell was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Hebron Lodge 575, Coolspring Township; Scottish Rite's New Castle Consistory; Independent Order of Odd Fellows 592, Sheakleyville; and the former Fredonia chapter; Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department; and Fredonia Delaware School Board.

He belonged to Mount Washington Cemetery Association, where he served as president for 21 years.

His first wife, the former Anna Rae McCauley, whom he married June 11, 1940, died Sept. 19, 1970. His second wife, the former Mary Rickert, whom he married Oct. 6, 1971, died Nov. 26, 1981.

Surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Robert L. (Ruth E.) Watson Jr. Sharpsville; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Larry (Marjorie) Sanata, Clark; a son, Joseph M., Sharpsville; a stepson, Robert Rickert, Burr Ridge, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Carl (Twila) McLaughlin, Jamestown; and Ina Morrison, Sharpsville; a brother, Raymond, Sharpsville; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides two wives, he was preceded in death by a sister, Erma Nickel; and three brothers, Thomas, August and Darrell ``Dutch.''

Richard `Dick' B. Maul

Worked in Pine Township's General Electric plant

LAKE CITY, Pa. _ Richard ``Dick'' B. Maul, Pettibone Avenue, formerly of Wesleyville, Erie County, died Saturday (8-16-97) in Bayside Integrated Health Services, Erie, after a brief illness. He was 59.

Mr. Maul was born Aug. 22, 1937, in Clarion, to Ted and Nanna Johnstone Maul.

Following his high school graduation, he graduated from General Electric Apprentice Program.

Mr. Maul retired in 1992 with 35 years of service as technical director in General Electric's Pine Township plant and also in the Kansas City, Kan.; and Erie plants.

He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League. He also enjoyed watching college basketball, reading and traveling.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Sandra Mushrush, to whom he was married 41 years; three sons, Ted, Melbourne, Fla.; Tom, Baton Rouge, La.; and Trent, Washington, D.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Mike (Terri Lynn) Quiggle, Girard, Pa.; a brother, Charles, Erie; and nine grandchildren.

His parents and an infant daughter, Kathleen Marie, preceded him in death.

CANTON, Ohio _ Harold J. Meehan, Canton, formerly of Sharon, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday (8-16-97) in Manor Care Nursing Center after an extended illness. He was 78.

Mr. Meehan was born April 19, 1919, in Sharon to Edward and Katherine Taylor Meehan.

He was a laborer for Sharon Tube Co.

Mr. Meehan was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.

Surviving are: a sister, Elaine Apisa, North Canton, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Genevieve Clark; and two brothers, Edward and Howard.

Mrs. Moore was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Farrell to Andrew and Mary Weber Schuster Sr.

She was a 1938 graduate of Farrell High School.

She retired in 1986 as a computer operator secretary in the storeroom of Sharon Steel Corp's former Farrell plant.

Mrs. Moore was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Sharon.

She belonged to the Saxon Club, Farrell.

Surviving are: her husband, John Moore, whom she married in 1962; a son, Gary Alan Tincu, Monroe, Conn.; a brother, Andrew G. Schuster Jr., Mercer; a sister, Dolores Thur, Hermitage; and six grandchildren.

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. _ Eugene L. Morreale, 24400 Tamiami Trail, formerly of Long Island, N.Y., died at 3:43 p.m. Saturday (8-16-97) in Lee Memorial Hospital, Bonita Springs, after a brief illness. He was 72.

Mr. Morreale was born July 7, 1925, in Franklin Square, N.Y., to Peter and Mary Ellen Farrell Morreale.

He was police commissioner 22 years in Long Island.

Mr. Morreale attended St. Leo's Catholic Church, Bonita Springs.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Mary Jeannette Paoletta; six daughters, Mrs. Frank (Jeanne) Gentile, Pittsburgh; Judy Lutz, Warren, Ohio; Mrs. Rick (Joyce) Restivo, Ballwin, Mo.; Mrs. Gary (Jody) Zajac, Sharon; Mrs. James (Geri) Hart, Hermitage; and Mrs. Ceaser (Jill) Chacon, Maryland, Mo.; four sons, Michael Paoletta, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Marc and Christopher Paoletta, both Sharon; and Robert Paoletta, Naples, Fla.; two sisters, Mae Joan Happ, Port St. Lucie, Fla.; and Mary Ruth Rathjen, Houston; three brothers, Vincent, Corinth, N.Y.; John, Levittown, N.Y.; and Warren, Sebastian, Fla.; 25 grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters.

Mrs. Polley was born Jan. 4, 1909, in Greenville to John and Cora B. McMahan Owen.

She retired in 1972 after 24 years as senior associate for the former J.C. Penney, Greenville.

She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 63; White Shrine of Jerusalem; and Order of Amaranth, all of Greenville.

Mrs. Polley belonged to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville.

Her husband, Wayne E. Polley, whom she married March 8, 1934, died Feb. 9, 1968.

Surviving are: a son, Jack W. Stevens, Greenville; a daughter, Mrs. Neal (Nancy) Tuggle, Waskom, Tx.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank H. and Edward J. Owen; and two sisters, Beatrice A. Rapp and Audrey McAuley.

Mrs. Shipton was born March 19, 1935 in Franklin to the Rev. Evart L. and Rosa Edith Snodgrass Porterfield.

A homemaker, she belonged to Lebanon United Presbyterian Church, Lackawannock Township; the United Commercial Travelers, Council 589 and was a past senior counselor of the Sharon auxiliary of UCT 395; and the Jefferson Township Civic League.

Surviving are: her husband, Paul L., whom she married Nov. 12, 1960; three daughters, Robin Miller of Sharon, Jeanette Jewell of Sharpsville, and Paul Kelley of Hermitage; two sisters, Jeanette Byerly of Sharpsville and Doris Roberts of Los Almos, N.M.; and five grandchildren.

Frank S. Steh Jr., 933 Judson Road, Masury, died at 5:35 a.m. Sunday (8-17-97) in Meadowbrook Manor, Hartford, of natural causes.

He was 86.

Mr. Steh was born Aug. 29, 1910, in Deegan, Pa., to Frank S. and Elizabeth Emery Steh.

He retired in 1972 as a hook-on from Sharon Steel Corp.'s former Farrell plant.

Mr. Steh was a member of Holy Trinity Church, Farrell.

Surviving is a sister, Irene Steh, Masury.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph P. and Stephen N.; and a sister, Irene.

ORLANDO, Fla. _ Tracy M. Wellsey, Orlando, formerly of Farrell, was found dead at home Saturday (8-16-97). He was 36.

Mr. Wellsey was born Dec. 10, 1960, in Fort Meade, Md., to John and Roberta Wellsey.

He attended Farrell High School.

Surviving are: his wife, Holly, at home; a daughter, Tyesha, Orlando; a son, Shawntee, Orlando; his mother, Farrell; his father, Orlando; a step-father, Douglas Smith, Farrell; two sisters, Terry Douglas and Tamika Wellsey, both Baltimore; and a brother, John Wellsey Boatwright, Youngstown.

He was preceded in death by a son, Tracy M. Wellsey Jr.
