Helen M. Atcheson

Grove City teacher was 50-year member of church


Funeral will be Tuesday for Helen M. Atcheson, Hillcrest Nursing Center, Grove City, formerly of College View Towers, 301 S. Broad St. and Fellowship Manor, who died at 4:15 a.m. Friday (8-29-97) in United Community Hospital, Pine Township. She was 88.

Mrs. Atcheson was born Jan. 29, 1909, in Reynoldsville, Pa., to J. Walter and Lida Strang Moore.

A 1929 graduate of Clarion State Teachers College, now Clarion State University, she taught in rural schools in Jefferson County for several years. She became a resident of the Grove City area in 1944 and became a homebound tutor and substitute teacher for Grove City Area School District for 20 years.

She was a member of Tower Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, and a member of its Fellowship Class and Presbyterian Women's Association.

She was a life member of the Pennsylvania Gladious Society and Clarion Alumni Association. She was a former member of the Garden Department of the Grove City Women's Club.

Surviving are: two daughters, Janet A. Jackson, Beaver, Pa.; and Mrs. Donald (Anne) Grubb, Huntley, Va.; two sons, John R. ``Jack'' Atcheson Jr., Prospect; and Richard M. Atcheson, Marion, Ind.; two sisters, Elizabeth M. Mowery, Reynoldsville, Pa.; and Muriel M. Gretzinger, Avington, Pa.; a brother, Byron E. Moore, Reynoldsville, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, John Ronald Atcheson, whom she married June 11, 1932, and who died Jan. 27, 1989, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Wayne, Arthur, Gerald, and Leonard Moore, and a grandson, David L. Jackson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Tower Presbyterian Church, Janet Graham Mission Fund, 248 S. Broad St., Grove City.

Mrs. John R. (Helen M.), 88, formerly of College View Towers, 301 S. Broad St. and Fellowship Manor, both Grove City.

James R. Foore

Hubbard truck driver was member of sportsman club

James R. Foore, 6053 Hubbard Road, Hubbard, died at 8:20 p.m. Thursday (8-28-97) in Liberty Health Care Center. He was 82.

Mr. Foore was born Nov. 4, 1914, in Hopewell, Pa., to Acie and Bertha Donaldson Foore.

He had been a truck driver for Yourga Trucking, Wheatland.

He attended First Baptist Church, Sharon, and was a member of the Pymatuning Sportsman's Club.

Besides his wife, the former Margaret L. Wardle, whom he married July 16, 1960, survivors are: a daughter, Judith Foore, Shenango Valley; three sons, Donald, Fred, and Bill Foore, all of the Shenango Valley; a step-daughter, Carol Powell, Sharon; and two step-sons, James Pedicini, Hubbard; and Donald Pedicini, Liberty Township; and a brother, Melvin Foore, Sharpsville; eight grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Loretta Foore, two sisters, Olive Hicklin, and Elizabeth Mollard, and two brothers, Wilmer and Frank Foore.

William L. Germano

First S. Py police chief was Mercer Co. Hall of Famer

Funeral will be Monday for William Carman ``Gully'' Germano, 2705 Anchorage Road, South Pymatuning Township, who died unexpectedly at 5:58 p.m. Thursday (8-28-97) at home. He was 68.

Mr. Germano was born March 21, 1929, in Farrell to Paul and Elizabeth Venezia Germano.

He attended Farrell schools.

He was owner-operator of the former Germano's Family Restaurant and Catering, South Pymatuning Township, from 1974 to 1989. He retired in 1974 from Sharon Steel's former Farrell plant as a metalurigical foreman with 31 years service.

Mr. Germano also founded the South Pymatuning Township Police Department in 1961 and served as its chief of police from 1961 to 1973. Mr. Germano was also a constable at one time in South Pymatuning Township and was appointed deputy sheriff for the Commonwealth of Pa. in 1972. And he was a South Pymatuning supervisor in 1980.

He was a former member of the First Assembly of God Church in Hermitage.

Mr. Germano was inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 1995 as a standout baseball and softball player. He played with the Stambaugh Merchants in the Shenango Valley Junior Baseball League and won the batting championship with a .476 average.

As a member of the Westinghouse Electric Corp. team, he hit the first home run under the lights while playing the Washington Capitals.

As a member of the Sharpsville American Legion team he was picked for the first East-West American Legion All-Star Team coached by legendary greats Honus Wagner, Cy Young, and Ty Cobb. The team played at the former Forbes Field, Pittsburgh, and the former Shibe Park, Philadelphia.

In an exhibition game at Valley Forge Military Hospital, he belted a grand slam and batted .465 to pace the team.

In 1947 he was a member of the Oil City Refineries, a Pittsburgh Pirates farm team. He was invited for a tryout with the Pirates during training camp in Bradenton, Fla. He also played with Carpo-Russ in the Penn-Ohio League and with the Championship Jefferson Club, Mercer County.

In softball during the 1950s he played for the Slovenian Home, Italian Home, and Local 1193.

He made the All-Star team in every league.

He coached and was one of the organizers of Little League in South Pymatuning Township.

He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, and a charter member of the Lakeland Watters Citizen Band Radio Club where he was known as Geronimo.

An Army veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post 945, Sharpsville.

Surviving, besides his wife, the former Dorothy M. Velkey, whom he married Aug. 26, 1950, are: two sons, William J. Germano, Falmouth, Mass.; and Robert M. Germano, Sharpsville; four sisters, Pauline Brest, Sharpsville; twins, Mrs. Eugene (Anna) Fout; and Mrs. Gabriel (Virginia) Develli, both of Sharpsville; and Betty Butler, Sharon; a brother, David Germano, Sharon; and four grandchildren;

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marion DiClaudio, and Helen Germano, and two brothers, John ``Jas'' and Orlando Germano.

R. Courtney McClelland

Obituary was published 8-19-97

R. Courtney McClelland, Denver, formerly of Grove City, died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Aug. 10, 1997, in Colorado. He was 43.

Local memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday (8-31-97) in Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer, with the Rev. Stanley Keehlwetter, pastor, officiating.


Anne Missik

Sharon woman retired after 10 years with The Herald

Memorial service will be Saturday for Anne Missik, 340 Sterling Ave., Sharon, who died Wednesday morning (8-27-97) at home. She was 86.

Mrs. Missik was born March 5, 1911, in Sharon to George and Anne Marie Banick Rathy Sr.

She attended Sharon schools.

Mrs. Missik retired from The Herald where she worked in the circulation department for 10 years.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Sharon. Her husband, John Missik Sr., whom she married in 1934, died Dec. 28, 1971.

Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Ernest (Patricia) Major, Franklinton, N.C.; and Donna Reiter, Sharon; a son, James A. Missik, Arlington, Texas; two brothers, George Rathy Jr., Warren, Ohio; and Paul Rathy, Bunn Level, N.C.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John Missik, Jr. who died Nov. 29, 1992.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sacred Heart Church, 40 S. Irvine Ave., Sharon, 16146.
