Dale D. `Blackie' Black

Sawhill retiree was member of New Castle Eagles

Dale D. ``Blackie'' Black, 45 Orchard Road, Wilmington Township, died at 8:20 p.m. Monday (9-15-97) in the hospital of Jameson Health System, New Castle. He was 64.

Mr. Black was born Jan. 19, 1933, in New Castle to Elmer and Ethel Black.

He attended the former Volant High School.

Mr. Black retired in January 1996 as a truck driver from Armco Inc. _Sawhill Tubular Division, Sharon.

He was a member of New Wilmington United Methodist Church.

He belonged to Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 455, New Castle.

Mr. Black enjoyed NASCAR racing, camping and traveling.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Evelyn ``Pee Wee'' Reynolds, whom he married Nov. 22, 1952; five daughters, Mrs. Edward (Sandra) Hudock, Mrs. William (Kathy) Gargasz, Mrs. Robert (Kim) Sharp, Mrs. Edward (Barbara) Sipe and Penny Black, all New Wilmington; two sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Vernice) McFarland, Harlansburg; and Mrs. Frank (Shirley) Pelesz, Volant; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Homer (Lucille) Cameron, Ann Black and Mrs. Stanley (Helen) Wimer; and two brothers, Robert and Francis.

David A. Burdick Sr.

Member of Fatima church was sports enthusiast

David A. Burdick, 1198 George St., Ext., Sharon, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday (9-15-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Greenville, after a brief illness. He was 63.

Mr. Burdick was born Dec. 3, 1933, in Sharon to Joseph and Anna Vukovich Burdick.

He was a 1951 graduate of Hickory High School, Hermitage.

He retired earlier this year as a meat cutter at Red and White Supermarket, Warren, Ohio.

Mr. Burdick was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell.

He belonged to the Croatian Club, Farrell.

A sports enthusiast, he was an umpire for baseball and softball leagues in the Shenango Valley; played softball; coached Little League in Farrell; and coached basketball for Our Lady of Fatima Church.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Catherine Marie Mecurio, whom he married May 19, 1956; two sons, David A. Jr., West Middlesex; and Mark J., Sharon; his mother, Anna Vukovich Burdick Matejich, Hermitage; a sister, Mrs. Charles (Dorothy) Castiglione, Hermitage; five brothers, Joseph and Ralph, both Hermitage; Robert, Mercer; Richard, Sharon; and Donald, in Louisiana; seven grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father; his stepfather, Matthew Matejich; and a sister, Marie Bell.

Fred W. Burrows

Retired millwright enjoyed working his own farm

Fred W. Burrows, 1276 McDonald Ohltown Road, Mineral Ridge, Ohio, formerly of Riggs Road, Shenango Township, died at 3 p.m. Monday (9-15-97) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System of a heart ailment. He was 81.

Mr. Burrows was born March 7, 1916, in Hubbard to Carl and Amy Boak Burrows.

Retiring in 1978, he was a millwright for 28 years in Sharon Steel Corp.'s former Farrell plant.

Mr. Burrows moved to Mineral Ridge in November.

He enjoyed farming and owned and operated his own farm for many years.

Mr. Burrows was a Protestant.

His wife, the former Josephine Grzesiuk, whom he married Feb. 26, 1937, died April 18, 1978.

Surviving are: a companion, Virginia Warjacki, Mineral Ridge; a son, Robert P., New Bedford; a daughter, Catherine Mastrangelo, Aurora, Ohio; three sisters, Belle Harshberger, Hubbard; Shirley Gerthing, Youngstown; and Wilma Hamilton, Springdale, Pa.; two brothers, Earl, Hadley; and Millard, West Middlesex; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Fred E.; three brothers, Dean, Gilbert and Kenneth; and two sisters, Delma Gordon and Amy Louise Thomas.

Fred W., 81, of 1276 McDonald Ohltown Road, Mineral Ridge, Ohio, formerly of Riggs Road, Shenango Township.

Margaret C. Crowell

Former Sharon woman was teacher in Hermitage

SARASOTA, Fla. _ Margaret C. Crowell, Sarasota, formerly of Sharon, died at 6:45 a.m. Friday (9-12-97) in Sarasota Memorial Hospital. She was 88.

Mrs. Crowell was born Feb. 4, 1909, in Warnock, Ohio, to Allen J. and Mary Crooks.

She was a graduate of Westminster College, New Wilmington, and completed graduate studies at University of Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania State University.

Mrs. Crowell taught in Hermitage schools.

She was a member of the board of regents of the former Julia F. Buhl Girl's Club, Sharon.

For five years Mrs. Crowell belonged to First Presbyterian Church, Sharon.

Surviving is a sister, Esther C. Rainey, Sarasota.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Burial was in Sarasota Memorial Park.


Connie Cull Freeze

Ex-Sharon woman was nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital

PHOENIX _ Connie Cull Freeze, 9027 W. Elm St., Phoenix, formerly of Columbia St., Sharon, died at 11 a.m. Saturday (9-13-97) in Good Samaritan Hospital after a stroke. She was 49.

Mrs. Freeze was born March 23, 1948, in Sharon to John E. and Alda Whitmore Cull.

She was a nurse in Good Samaritan Hospital.

Surviving are: a son, Joe Dean Freeze; a daughter, Angela Freeze Johansen; her mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Alda Whitmore Cull) Tapia; two grandsons; and two granddaughters, all of Phoenix.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday (9-17-97) in Desert Oasis Christian Church, 6849 W. Indian School Road, Phoenix.

Her body was donated to science.


William Jerome

East High graduate retired as Republic Steel foreman

William Jerome, 3757 Hubbard-West Middlesex Road, Shenango Township, died at 12:50 a.m. Monday (9-15-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Shenango Valley, Farrell. He was 84.

Mr. Jerome was born Jan. 19, 1913, in Yonkers, N.Y., to John and Catherine Elic Jerome.

He was a 1930 graduate of East High School, Youngstown.

Mr. Jerome retired in 1970 as a turn foreman after 30 years in the open hearth department of Republic Steel, Youngstown.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Hubbard.

His wife, the former Anne Severin, whom he married May 15, 1943, died March 6, 1986.

Surviving are: a son, William S. Jerome, Norton, Ohio; and three granddaughters.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathryn Jerome; and two brothers, James and Thomas.

Michael J. Marincich

Farrell High grad was LPN in Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ Divine Liturgy will be Thursday for Michael J. Marincich, 1701 S.W. 10th Court, formerly of Emerson Avenue, Farrell. He died Monday (9-15-97) at home after an extended illness. He was 57.

Mr. Marincich was born Oct. 2, 1939, in Sharon to Spiro and Elizabeth Hajduk Marincich.

He was a 1957 graduate of Farrell High School.

An Army veteran, he served during the Vietnam era.

Mr. Marincich was a licensed practical nurse at Doctor's Hospital, Hollywood, Fla. Previously he was employed by St. Francis Hospital, Miami.

He was a founding memmber of St. Simeon Serbian Orthodox Church, North Miami, Fla., and served on its trustee board.

Mr. Marincich belonged to the Serbian Home, Farrell.

Surviving are: two sisters, Mildred Marincich, Hollywood; and Mrs. Peter (Martha) Grkinich, Farrell; and a brother, Theodore, Miami.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Louis Oluich; and a sister, Georgia Ann.

Frances Anne Poulter Miller

Retired reading coordinator also was eucharistic minister

CHARLOTTE, N.C. _ Frances Anne Poulter Miller, Matthews, N.C., formerly of Oil City, died at 6 p.m. Monday (9-8-97) in Presbyterian Hospital. She was 47.

Mrs. Miller was born Jan. 30, 1950, in Oil City to William and Josephine Rinella Poulter.

She retired after 10 years as a reading coordinator from the Mecklenburg County, N.C., school system, Charlotte.

Mrs. Miller was a member of the National Education Association; North Carolina Association of Educators; Association for Supervision of Curriculum and Development; International Reading Association; and the Charlotte Reading Association.

She belonged to the the board of the Historical Foundation and Woman's Club Service League, both Matthews.

A eucharistic minister, Mrs. Miller was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Charlotte.

Surviving are: her husband, Joseph J. Miller, whom she married Oct. 1, 1983; a daughter, Renee Miller, Charlotte; a son, Matthew, at home; her mother, Josephine R. Poulter, Sharpsville; a sister, Janet Moldovan, Masury; two brothers, William Poulter, McMinnville, Ore.; and Kerry Poulter, Cornelius, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her father; and two sisters, Martha Welch and Barbara Ghering.

A memorial service was Friday (9-12-97) in St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Charlotte, with the Rev. Richard M. Bellow, Order of Friars Minor, as celebrant. After the service, the family received friends in the Reid House, Matthews, for a celebration of Mrs. Miller's life. Burial will be private.


Mary Sember

Former Sharon homemaker was born in Austria-Hungary

CLEVELAND _ Mary Sember, 4118 Stickney Ave., Cleveland, formerly of 430 S. Irvine Ave., Sharon, died at noon Wednesday (9-10-97) in Aristocrat South, Parma Heights, Ohio. She was 96.

Mrs. Sember was born Aug. 11, 1901, in Austria-Hungary, to Basil and Julia Sember.

She was a member of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Cleveland.

A homemaker, she married George Sember in 1919. He died Sept. 17, 1959.

Surviving are: a daughter, Helen Gelety, Cleveland; and two sons, Stephen, Pittsburgh; and Michael, Sharon; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two daughters, Mary and Ann.

Divine Liturgy was celebrated in St. Mary's Church and burial was in Holy Spirit Cemetery, Cleveland.




Kenneth P. Taylor

Masury man was WWII vet and retired sales manager

Kenneth P. Taylor, 1362 Broadway Ave., Masury, and Jupiter, Fla., died at 5:55 a.m. Monday (9-15-97) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. He was 74.

Mr. Taylor was born April 13, 1923, in Stoneboro to Frederick and Elsie Parker Taylor.

He was a 1941 graduate of Hubbard High School.

An Air Force veteran, he served during World War II.

Mr. Taylor retired in 1986 as a sales manager from Koppers Inc. and after 40 years from the former Jennings Manufacturing, both Masury.

He was a member of Masury United Methodist Church and First United Church of Christ, Jupiter.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Beverly Jennings, whom he married June 20, 1947; two sons, Timothy, Masury; and James, Montreal; a daughter, Pamela Taylor, Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James; and a sister, Dorothy Jones.

Memorial contributions may be made to Masury United Methodist Church, 1382 Broadway Ave., Masury 44438; or Sharon Regional Health System Hospice, 490 N. Kerrwood Drive, Hermitage 16148.

Kenneth P., 74, of 1362 Broadway Ave., Masury, and Jupiter, Fla.

Wilbert G. Timmons

Pittsburgh-area man's wife lives in Farrell

GREENTREE, Pa. _ Wilbert G. Timmons, Scott Township, Allegheny County, died Monday morning (9-15-97) in Manor Care Nursing Center, Greentree, of pneumonia. He was 89.

Mr. Timmons was born April 9, 1908, in Pittsburgh.

He belonged to Syria Temple and was a life member of Dallas Lodge 508.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Ruth W. Willenberg of Farrell, whom he married May 16, 1936; a son, William W., Upper St. Clair, Pa.; four brothers, William, Warren and Calvin, all Pittsburgh; and Herbert, Bellevue, Wash.; and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Leroy; and a sister, Grace Timmons.
