Ralph P. `Dempse' Cooper

Ralph P. ``Dempse'' Cooper, Maple Leaf Manor, formerly of 105 W. Windridge Road, both Hempfield Township, died at 4:45 a.m. this morning (9-22-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Greenville. He was 78.

William C. Cunningham

Sharon Steel retiree also built homes

William C. Cunningham, 6167 Amy Boyle Road, Brookfield, died at 7:20 p.m. Saturday (9-20-97) in Horizon Hospital System, Shenango Valley, Farrell. He was 77.

Mr. Cunningham was born Nov. 1, 1919, in Meadville to Robert R. and Florence H. Warren Cunningham Sr.

He was a 1937 graduate of Brookfield High School.

An Air Force veteran, he served during World War II, earning a Good Conduct Medal, a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

A self-employed home builder, Mr. Cunningham was employed for 39 years in the maintenance department of Sharon Steel Corp.'s former Farrell plant, retiring in 1979.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Vienna.

He belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8860, Masury.

Mr. Cunningham was an avid outdoorsman and sports fan.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Valeria LaCamera, whom he married Aug. 10, 1940; a son, William C. Cunningham II, Ovieda, Fla.; two daughters, Cheryl Babcock, Brookfield; and Mrs. Gary (Pamela) Goblinger, Hubbard; two brothers, Robert R. Cunningham Jr. and Ernest, both Brookfield; a sister, Olive ``Joan'' Roman, Hubbard; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Scutillo and Isabelle McClung; and an infant brother, David.

Dorothy Louise Evans

Homemaker was member of Sharon 1st Baptist

Funeral will be Wednesday for Dorothy Louise Evans, 979 Sharon Hogue Road, Masury. She died Saturday afternoon (9-20-97) in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. She was 67.

Mrs. Evans was born June 26, 1930, in Sharon to Cecil H. and Mabel Calvin Millikin.

She graduated fron Brookfield High School.

Mrs. Evans was a homemaker.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Sharon.

Surviving are: her husband, Stanley M. Evans, whom she married Nov. 22, 1962; two sons, Albert L., Greenville; and Larry, Biloxi, Miss.; two daughters, Rhoda Murchison, Panama City, Fla.; and Donna Hoffman, Masury; and nine grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Ronald and Galen Evans.

Jacob George Jones

Local trucker was Korean War veteran

Jacob George Jones, 389 Yankee Ridge Road, Lackawannock Township, died at 6:40 a.m. Sunday (9-21-97) in Mercer County Living Center, Coolspring Township, after an extended illness. He was 63.

Mr. Jones was born Aug. 23, 1934, in Hartstown to William C. and Dortha Shartle Jones.

An Army and Marine Corps veteran, he served during the Korean conflict.

He was a truck driver for 32 years for various local companies.

Mr. Jones was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Hickory Post 6166, Hermitage.

His wife, the former Nona Caldwell, died April 11, 1983.

Surviving are: a daughter, Danielle Sumner, with whom he lived; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Thomas (Michele) Mazuda, Sharon; three sons, William, San Diego; John, Sharon; and Raymond, Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Naomi, in Florida; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family through the funeral home.

Pauline J. `P.J.' Leone

St. Bernadette's member worked at Warehouse Sales

Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday for Pauline J. ``P.J.'' Leone, 7948 Third St., Masury. She died at 3:50 p.m. Saturday (9-20-97) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. She was 71.

Mrs. Leone was born Jan. 1, 1926, in Sharon to Paul and Rhea Grandy Curtin.

She was a bookkeeper for 15 years at Warehouse Sales, Sharon.

Mrs. Leone attended St. Bernadette's Church, Masury.

She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell, and a social member of the American Legion Post 299, Sharon. Previously, she belonged to Blue Star Mothers of America and Veterans of Foreign Wars Shenango Valley Post 1338, Sharon.

Mrs. Leone enjoyed needlecraft, reading and crossword puzzles.

Surviving are: her husband, Robert J. Leone, whom she married July 3, 1971; a son, Bruce Straley, Cheyenne, Wyo.; a daughter, Sonja Cave, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; two brothers, Robert Curtin, Hubbard; and Paul Slater, Hartford; a sister, Lori Misavage, Erie; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth DeMaiolo.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

James M. Matthews

Retired mail carrier was past president of county NAACP

Funeral will be Wednesday for James M. Matthews, 708 Beechwood Ave., Farrell. He died at 2:35 p.m. Saturday (9-20-97) in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 83.

Mr. Matthews was born Jan. 24, [JU]1914, in Sharon to James Elmer and Sadie V. McKinney Matthews.

He was a 1935 graduate of Sharon High School.

A Navy veteran, he served during World War II.

For 33 years, he was a Postal Service mail carrier, retiring in 1978.

Mr. Matthews was a member of Ruth African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Sharon.

He was a charter member of Mercer County Frontiers Club; and past president of the Mercer County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars New Murray Bell Post 9597, Farrell.

Surviving are: his wife, the former Jean Elizabeth Arkward, whom he married May 15, 1977; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Bruce (Lynette) Ford, Columbus, Ohio; and Kimberley Brooks, Macon, Ga.; a stepson, Edward M. Cooper Jr., Macon; two sisters, Mrs. James (Gertrude) Dixon, Gary, Ind.; and Mrs. Allen (Shirley) Williams, Masury; five brothers, the Rev. William Frank Matthews, Detroit; Elmer E., Washington, D.C.; Walter E. and Carl T., both Sharon; and C. Roy, Gary, Ind.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson; three brothers, Shelton M., Kenneth T., and Harold E.; and a sister, Mary M.

Sadie Intreri Monaco

Woman was former co-owner of Monaco Beverage Co.

STEELTON, Pa. _ Sadie Intreri Monaco, 608 Pine St., Steelton,formerly of Rexford Drive, Hermitage, died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday (9-21-97) at home. She was 89.

Mrs. Monaco was born Dec. 9, 1907, in Steelton to Antonio and Josephine Conti Intreri.

She attended Steelton High School.

For more than 20 years, she and her husband owned and operated the former Monaco Beverage Co., Farrell. Previously, she worked at the former F.W. Woolworth store, Steelton.

Mrs. Monaco was a member of Prince of Peace Church, Steelton, and St. Joseph's Church, Sharon.

She was a former member of Sharon Regional Health System Auxiliary and Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court 507, Sharon.

Her husband James J. Monaco, whom she married Sept. 17, 1938, died Jan. 28, 1989.

Surviving are: two sisters, Adaline T. Intreri, Steelton, and Mildred Deuidicibus, Camp Hill, Pa.
