MERCER COUNTY

County, sheriff’s staff OK pact

Mercer County Commissioners Thursday ratified a five-year labor contract with sheriff’s deputies and clerks.

Wages in the pact between the county and United Steelworkers of America Local 1355-06 are retroactive to Jan. 1. The 10 deputies and clerks have been working under terms of the old contract since it expired Dec. 31.

The new pact calls for 3 percent annual wage increases for clerks and 4 percent annual wage increases for deputies. In the first year of the contract, the increase will bring the average wage for both deputies and clerks to $14.25 an hour, said William J. Boyle, county personnel director.

Health care benefits and co-payments will be similar to that of courthouse employees, Boyle said. The county settled with courthouse employees two months ago. Boyle said talks with the Teamsters are at a stalemate. He said he expects the labor dispute to go into binding arbitration.
