Sharon Regional Health System said it will open a new family medical center in a building going up on Main Street in Greenville.

The health care provider’s decision to build the 4,750 square foot center at 348 Main Street in Greenville was made after carefully evaluating a number of factors, said Wayne Johnston, president and chief executive officer of Sharon Regional.

“In researching the feasibility of constructing a satellite center in Greenville, we determined there was a need for more primary care physicians, improved access to medical specialists and local access to medical services for residents covered by insurance plans such as Highmark Blue Cross’ community Blue Plan and the Gateway and Three Rivers Health plans,’’ Johnston said. In addition to its Farrell hospital, UPMC Horizon operates a hospital in Greenville just a few blocks away from where Sharon Regional’s center will be located. Over the years both institutions have been vying for market share by expanding existing medical facilities or building new ones. Sharon Regional’s new Greenville building, which is scheduled to open June 1 and will be called The Greenville Family Medicine Center, will feature several family physician. In addition specialists in the fields of cardiology, urology, obstetrics/gynecology and maternal fetal medicine, neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, gastroenterology neurology, endocrinology.

Doctors at Sharon Regional’s Greenville center will be participants in Gateway, Three Rivers Health Plan and Community Blue insurance plans. Sharon Regional said these health insurance plans previously had no representation in the Greenville area.

Sharon Regional plans to move its existing Behavioral Health Services Greenville office into the first floor of the new center after its opens. The Greenville Behavioral Health Service office is currently located at 59 West Main St.

Also, Sharon Regional’s Corporate Health Services, which provides occupational medicine, will have an office in the new center.

The new center will also offer a laboratory area, x-ray, EKG, ultrasound, classroom/conference room for community education programs, video/health resource lending library, six examination rooms and other support space.

Sharon Regional operates other satellite centers in Sharon, Hermitage, Farrell, Mercer and Brookfield.
