WOLF CREEK TOWNSHIP

Elderly man dies in van/truck accident

An 87-year-old Grove City-area man was killed when his van was hit by a dump truck at noon Monday at state Route 173 and Scrubgrass Road, Wolf Creek Township, state police said.

Clifford M. Stearns, 2184 Scrubgrass Road, was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:47 p.m. by Mercer County Deputy Coroner Scott Black. Black said the cause of death was blunt force trauma, which he ruled accidental.

Stearns was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Stearns stopped at the stop sign on Scrubgrass, facing east, and pulled his van into the path of the southbound truck, driven by James L. Robinson Jr., 33, of 1205 Milledgeville Road, Deer Creek Township, police said.

The truck hit the van’s left front, and the van spun onto the west side of Route 173, police said. The truck went off the east side, police said.

Jackson Center Volunteer Fire Department assisted.
