3 injured in East State Street wreck

A three-vehicle crash at 4 p.m. Monday in the 3600 block of East State Street sent three people to area hospitals, police said.

Police said a westbound minivan driven by Jeffrey S. Atkins, 29, of 126 N. Irvine Ave., Sharon, crossed the center line and hit a trailer that was carrying a backhoe. The trailer was being pulled by an eastbound truck driven by Richard A. Watson, 44, of 1887 Sandy Lake-Grove City Road, Jackson Center, police said.

Police said Atkins’ car bounced off the trailer and smashed into a car driven by Anthony J. Perry, 23, of 18 Winner Road, Hermitage. Atkins was thrown from the minivan and landed in a yard, police said.

Atkins was in fair condition and Perry in satisfactory condition Tuesday morning at the hospital at Sharon Regional Health System, a hospital spokesperson said. Janeece Paddock, of 1273 Lynnwood Drive, Hermitage, who was a passenger in Atkins’ minivan, was treated at UPMC Horizon, Farrell, a hospital spokesperson said.

Police said the crash was under investigation.
