FARRELL

Courthouse escapee nabbed in Farrell

A Farrell man who escaped from the Mercer County Courthouse on Thursday was arrested a short time later hiding in the attic of his home in the 600 block of Emerson Avenue, Farrell, police said.

Phillip "Jiggs" Wells, 28, had just been sentenced by Mercer County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael J. Wherry for violating house arrest under the Intermediate Punishment Program, said Mercer County Chief Deputy Ron Clark.

Wherry revoked Wells’ house arrest and ordered him to jail when he left, Clark said.

"He didn’t like what the judge said and he left," Clark said.

Wells, who was wearing his house arrest bracelet, had appeared in court on his own and was not in sheriff’s custody prior to the hearing, Clark said. His hearing was set for 8:45 a.m., although his case was not the first that Wherry heard that was set for that time, Clark said.

A jail official saw Wells running toward the Shenango Valley and Wells apparently got a ride home, Clark said. Police got a tip that he was home, Clark said. He was arrested with the help of Southwest Mercer County Regional police at 10:25 a.m.

Wells was taken to Mercer County Jail.
