Speck, the German shepherd who joined the department in October, did not live up to training expectations, said Police Chief Bruce Rosa.
Speck had left for a three-week training program in Mechanicsburg, Pa., last week with his handler, patrolman Thomas Borton.
Rosa said that while Speck was able to sniff and track, he was afraid of smooth tile and polished floors.
Borton will return from Mechanicsburg next week with a new dog, also a German shepherd. The dog has the same certification as Speck and, like Speck, is able to sniff seven different types of narcotics. Replacing Speck did not cost the department extra money, Rosa said.
If the new dog works out, he will begin patrols next weekend, Rosa said.
