NEW CASTLE

Accused told police of killing

The Associated Press

Two of the three men accused of killing a 12-year-old Ohio girl last month gave conflicting accounts of how she died, police testified Wednesday.

The testimony came at a hearing before a district justice who decided there was enough evidence to hold the men for trial. District Justice J.V. Lamb of New Castle ordered William George Monday, David Christopher Garvey and Perry Sam Ricciardi, all of Struthers, Ohio, held for trial on all charges without bond. The three were returned to the Lawrence County Jail.

The men are charged with homicide, conspiracy to commit homicide, kidnapping, unlawful restraint and conspiracy to commit rape in the Oct. 8 death of Shannon Leigh Kos of Youngstown.

Ricciardi also faces a charge of abusing a corpse. The men have all pleaded innocent.

"What we have here is a bad joke that obviously turned into a horrible reality," said Tom Minett, assistant district attorney for Lawrence County.

He said the men "established a fantasy scenario that they carried out at the expense of Shannon Kos."

Kos was discovered at a teen-age party spot in Mahoning Township, Lawrence County, near the Pennsylvania-Ohio state line. Area teens call the spot "Zombie Land," and sometimes drink or take drugs there.

Before testimony began, Shannon’s mother walked past Monday and smacked him in the side of the head. Four guards standing nearby apparently did not see her and did nothing.

Chris Thompson, a friend of the men, testified that they often discussed raping a young girl and then abandoning or killing her, possibly across the Pennsylvania state line.

But he also testified that both Ricciardi and Garvey told him they did not commit the crime.

State Police Cpl. Raymond J. Melder testified Wednesday that Ricciardi told police that Monday killed Shannon after Garvey tried to sexually assault her.

Ricciardi said all three men agreed to rape Kos, but he backed out at the last minute.

Trooper Scott Patterson testified that Monday gave him a different account of the killing.

Patterson said Monday told him he and Garvey apparently stabbed Kos to death during a knife fight while Monday was on LSD. He said they were arguing because Garvey had tried to assault Shannon.
