DELAWARE TOWNSHIP

Woman dies in one-car crash

A 76-year-old Greenville woman died in a harrowing one-car crash Friday in Delaware Township, police said.

Helen V. Butterfield, 20 Lancaster Ave., was pronounced dead at 8:09 p.m. at the scene by Mercer County Deputy Coroner Cris Loutzenhiser, police said.

Mrs. Butterfield was westbound at 7:20 p.m. on Route 58 when her car went off the north side of the road about one-half mile east of Delaware Road, police said.

The car traveled about 75 feet in a ditch and hit a log, which sent it airborne, police said.

The car landed on its left side, rolled a number of times and slid on its roof into a telephone pole, police said.

Police said they believe Mrs. Butterfield, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car when it hit the pole.

The car spun away from the pole on its roof before stopping, police said.

Fredonia volunteer firefighters assisted.
