TV workers OK strike but stay on job

Hourly workers for Youngstown television stations WKBN and WYFX have authorized a strike, although they remain on the job, according to the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians/Communications Work-ers of America.

The union workers include photographers, production assistants, reporters, directors, anchors and other on-air employees.

The union turned down a contract offer Friday, two days after the old contract expired.

Wages, health-care benefits, a separate wage scale for new hires and excessive workload generated by the 1998 startup of WYFX are issues of contention, the union said. The sides will meet later this week.

WKBN is Channel 27 and WYFX is Channels 17 and 62.
