Lakeview Area School Board Tuesday approved a 2001-02 budget for Grove City-based Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV.
Board member William Evans questioned the expense and wisdom of using the intermediate unit to buy supplies and services.
Evans cast the only vote against Lakeview’s $12,968 share of the intermediate unit’s $4,148,240 budget.
"I think we are too dependent upon the IU," he said.
School Superintendent Dr. Paulette Savolskis said the state set up regional intermediate units in different areas of the state to help schools get better services and prices than they could afford independently.
Savolskis said that by participating in the intermediate unit the school takes advantage of group rates and is able to participate in educational programs where the unit provides the speaker.
The district uses the unit to contract computer hookups and to buy items such as ink cartridges and light bulbs for overhead projectors.
The cost of participation is calculated for each school district by the state Department of Education.
The board approved participation in the following activities for which the intermediate unit handles programs and expenses: Title I, designating federal funds for underprivileged students; Title II for math and science; Safe and Drug-Free Schools program which identifies and works with students at risk for alcohol and drugs; and Title III, which provides federal funding for technology.
