Boys find dead dog, rabbit, mom says

An emaciated dog -- with its head beaten in, a broomstick in its mouth, and all four legs broken -- was found dead Thursday afternoon off South Dock Street behind Consumers Pennsylvania Water Co., Shenango Valley Division, by an 11-year old boy and his cousins.

The boys also found a rabbit skeleton nearby in a padlocked cage, said Cyndi Sankey, a temporary agent for Humane Society of Mercer County, who removed the dogs remains Saturday.

"It makes me feel sick," said Gwen Mitchell, whose son and nephews found the animals. "It upset my son to see this. I mean if people don’t want their animals they can take them somewhere or if it was just someone who did this, they are sick."

The animals were found about 15 feet behind her home in a wooded lot.

The ribs and vertebrae of the medium-sized brown dog could be seen through its skin, Ms. Sankey said.

"It looked like the dog had been starved then tortured to death. And it’s possible the rabbit had been electrocuted because there was some kind of wire hooked up to the cage," she said.

Ms. Sankey notified Sharon police and took the dog’s remains to Shenango Valley Animal Shelter.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Humane Society of Mercer County at 981-5445.
