MARION, Ind. -- An 11-year-old Indiana boy who admitted to shooting his abusive father could serve his sentence at a Mercer County shelter for delinquent boys.

Wayne Salyers Jr. was originally charged with murder in the Aug. 25 shooting of his father, 37-year-old Wayne Salyers Sr., but later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

He may serve his disposition -- the juvenile equivalent of a sentencing -- at George Junior Republic in Pine Township.

George Junior officials said this morning they are not aware that Wayne is being sent to them. Principal Mark Ferrara said the center must educate any student sent there. "We really don’t have any say on who comes," he said.

After making some phone calls to officials in Indiana, Jeff Morris, who is in charge of treatment for youth at George Junior, said, "We have been asked to look at the case." He added several other facilities are also reviewing the boy’s case.

Morris said if Wayne should be transferred to George Junior he would be lodged in the diagnostic or "closed" unit.

Morris said he could not comment further because he didn’t even know "the boy’s" name or case history.

George Junior is a 24-hour secure shelter offering a highly structured lifestyle, multidisciplinary treatment and education/behavioral services to delinquent youth.

Reportedly the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office, Wayne’s defense team and the Grant County Welfare Department agreed upon the location Tuesday.

A date has not been set for when Wayne will be transferred from the Grant County Juvenile Justice Center.

Defense attorney P. Martin said he was unsure when or how often the boy’s family would be able to visit him in Pennsylvania because of their financial situation.

Wherever Wayne is sent he will participate in intensive individual therapy two to three times a week. He will also work in group counseling.

Wayne admitted using his father’s gun to shoot him because he thought it was the only way to escape physical and mental abuse.
