Tourism continues to grow, report says

A state report shows tourist spending in Mercer County grew by $17 million in 1999.

The 1999 Pennsylvania Economic Impact Report shows tourists spent $235 million in the county during the year compared to $218 million in 1998.

Tourism spending in Mercer County generated more than $24 million in federal tax revenue and more than $10 million in state and local tax revenue in 1999, according to the report.

Mercer County ranked 22nd of the state’s 67 counties in the level of visitor spending.

During 1999 total tourist spending in the state was $20.9 billion and supported 561,258 full- and part-time jobs paying $11.2 billion in wages and benefits.

This is National Tourism Week and local businesses and organizations are showcasing the area at the Interstate 80 Welcome Center in Shenango Township.
