Council OKs money for priority street repairs

Sharpsville council OK’d spending $80,000 to repair borough streets Wednesday, but the cost of repairing all streets on a priority list is $34,000 higher.

Council vice president Thomas Lally said the estimated costs of needed street improvements add up to $114,000.

Council approved using $80,000 of the capital improvement fund for street repair. No money for repairs was included this year in the street department account so the budget would balance, Mayor Kenneth P. Robertson said.

Borough Manager Michael Wilson said council sets aside money each year for capital improvements. So far the money has mostly been used to buy police cruisers, dump trucks and fire trucks, and council has also started setting money aside for borough building improvements, he said.

Councilman Jack Cardwell said council set aside $250,000 in the budget to renovate the borough building and said that much isn’t needed.

Main and Eighth streets are top priorities for repairs, Wilson said.

Council also has $120,000 in Community Development Block Grant money to fix Main Street, but it can only be used if residents along the street meet low to moderate income guidelines. If too few residents of the street meet income guidelines, council will look into using the money on another street, Wilson said.

Cardwell said Leona Street also needs to be fixed, which would cost about $30,000. Cardwell said Milliken Avenue and Fourth Street are also in bad shape, but they are in the vicinity of the school district’s elementary building project.

Wilson said council won’t plan repairs of streets near the school until construction is finished and the heavy equipment is moved out.
