HERMITAGE

Parks and Rec plans include summer trips

Two sports trips highlight the Hermitage Parks and Recreation Department's long list of spring and summer workshops and recreation events.

A three-day, 90-hole golf getaway to Linden Hall resort in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania is scheduled for June 29-July 1, and a trip to PNC Park in Pittsburgh for a Pirates game is set for July 28.

The golf getaway costs $295. Greens fees, dinner Friday and Saturday, breakfast Saturday and Sunday, and lodging are included in the package. The last day to register is June 15.

The PNC Park trip costs $45. The Pirates host the Houston Astros on "Floppy Hat Night," a promotional give-away at the new ballpark.

Other city Parks and Rec workshops and activities include:

  • Seven music courses, including four "piano camps" for aspiring pianists of all ages and three music appreciation classes. The piano camps cost $80 and the music appreciation classes cost $40. Cheryl Summer instructs each four-week-long course. The registration deadline is June 4.

  • Spanish I and II classes taught by Audrey Ordonez. Each class costs $40 and lasts four weeks.

  • Vegetable gardening for children. Children chose plots Saturday near the Stewart House, 5465 E. State St., and planted more than 20 different kinds of vegetables. There are activities planned through the Aug. 29 harvest, as well as an end-of-the-program picnic.

  • Finance seminars led by Robert C. Jazwinski, founder and principal of Jazwinski Financial Services in Hermitage.

One two-hour seminar at Pennsylvania State University, Shenango campus, remains; the first was held Tuesday. The topic of a June 5 seminar is "Long-term Care." The seminar costs $25. For more info, contact the university registration office at 983-2832.

  • Adult classes, including a five-week-long swing dancing course, a book club and three four-session computer courses.

The swing dancing course taught by Pat Reda costs $25 a person or $40 for couples. The computer courses cost $12.50 for seniors, $25 for residents and $30 for nonresidents.

Stigliano's BookSource Book Club meets for two hours on the first Tuesday of each month at the East State Street bookstore. The price of books is the only cost.

  • A crafters club and a five-week-long scrapbooking workshop. The crafters club is free, and the workshop costs $65.

  • Several free activities through the Summer Rec Program, sponsored by the city and the Hermitage School District. The program, which begins June 11 and runs until July 27, offers arts and crafts, music lessons, cheerleading, weight lifting and skill building, and a playground program.

  • Numerous organized sports programs, including individual programs for soccer, girls volleyball, girls track and field, wrestling, golf, tennis and swimming.

  • Seasonal passes for Buhl Farm Outdoor Pool. The discount passes cost $60 for families, $40 for adults and $25 for children.

For more information about these and other city programs, call the Hermitage Parks and Recreation Department at 981-0800 or visit the city's Web site at www.hermitage.net.
