GREENVILLE, HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP

Water authority approves new line for Horizon

After at least two years of discussion, UPMC Horizon’s Greenville hospital will get the water pressure it has been requesting.

Greenville Municipal Authority recently gave the green light for Killam and Associates, Warrendale, Pa., to design an extension of water lines from Hadley Road in Hempfield Township to the hospital in Greenville.

Lines will be extended from the corner of Sixth Avenue and Hadley Road down Sixth Avenue and a right-of-way to the hospital, said Bill Brady, water authority superintendent.

Currently, the low pressure lines through downtown Greenville provides water to the hospital, Brady said. It was not enough to meet the hospital’s water flow requirements for its fire sprinkler system. By providing from the higher pressure Hadley Road area, the water flow and pressure will meet the hospital’s needs.

Hospital representative first asked the water authority for more water pressure two to three years ago -- when the authority was discussing new water lines for Hadley Road, the superintendent said.

The line extension project is expected to begin by early September and be finished by late October.

To meet the estimated $233,000 cost, the authority has applied for a $100,000 grant from the state Innovative Growing Greener funding program and has asked for $200,000 in state funds through state Rep. Rod Wilt, Sugar Grove Township, R-17th District. If state grants cannot fund the entire cost, the authority will borrow from a bank, Brady said.

UPMC Horizon has promised $25,000 towards the project, if the hospital gets its required water flows when the project is completed, Brady said.
