CCL gives union final contract offer

CCL Container Corp. gave its union workers a "final" contract offer Monday night, a union leader said today.

Negotiators for the Hermitage company and IUE--CWA Local 648 met in a bargaining session Monday night. The local represents 154 production and maintenance workers at the aerosol can plant.

"The company said this is it,'' said Dave Paulsen, president of the local. "We won't get a second chance to vote on this again.''

A ratification vote is set for Thursday but Paulsen didn't have a time or location yet. The union set a midnight Saturday strike deadline, he said.

There were changes in the company's offer from a tentative agreement reached between the company and union last month. Members rejected that contract June 27 and workers extended their contract on a day-to-day basis.

A company spokesman was out of the office and didn't immediately return a phone message.
