No-F opponent questions plan's legality

A Sharon school director wants to know if a proposed no-F policy for junior high and high school students is legal.

Nick Morocco Monday asked solicitor Mark Longietti about the legality of the part of the policy that would restrict students who are failing a class from attending school-related social or sporting events. Morocco said he thinks attending an event is a "right" and is different from participating in it.

"Obviously I don't support this," Morocco said. "I just wonder how you can keep a student out if they're failing geometry."

Longietti said he did not have an opinion "off the cuff" but understands the concern.

Superintendent Richard A. Rossi said existing school policy states: "Participation in school events is not a right and may be denied to any student who has demonstrated disregard for the rules of the school."

Rossi said that policy will be adjusted to complement the no-F policy if it is approved.

The no-F policy was given its first reading Monday. It is expected to come to a vote Aug. 20.

The policy -- proposed by Director Richard Mancino in July 2000 -- prohibits students who are failing a class from participating in any school sporting, extracurricular or social event from Sunday through the following Saturday.

The policy was originally proposed only for athletes and students who are involved with extra-curricular activities. Rossi suggested last week that the policy apply to all students.

The policy would not affect students until the sixth week of each nine-week grading period. Students who are failing would also have to attend mandatory, after-school study sessions, which would also be open to any student who wants extra academic help.
