Teen-ager pleads guilty to ethnic intimidation

A 17-year-old Jamestown boy has pleaded guilty for his involvement in a June cross-burning in Jamestown.

The teen pleaded guilty to charges of ethnic intimidation, harassment, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief this week in a juvenile hearing before Mercer County Common Pleas Judge Francis Fornelli, state police said.

The Mercer County Juvenile Probation Office could not release information about the teen because juvenile court records are not public.

The teen and Jeffrey Michael Barnes, 19, of 401 Washington St., Jamestown, were accused of setting fire to two kerosene-soaked wooden crosses at 12:15 a.m. June 4 in the front yard of Amy Jo Raber, 28, of 209 Scipio St., Jamestown, police said. Ms. Raber, who is white, has two children and a boyfriend who are black.

Barnes pleaded guilty to ethnic intimidation on June 21. He was sentenced to 1 year of probation and ordered to pay $306 in fines and court costs.

Barnes said on June 21 that he and his friend thought a cross-burning would be a funny joke and didn't realize until later that their "joke" terrified Ms. Raber and her mother, who were home at the time.
