Local reps back 'right to work' bill

One local legislator is downplaying a news release which says he is supporting right to work legislation.

Pennsylvanians For Right to Work Inc., a lobbying group, issued the release Wednesday which says State Reps. Rod Wilt and Dick Stevenson are co-sponsors of House Bill 1808. The measure would guarantee workers' freedom to decide whether or not to join or support a labor union when accepting a job in the public or private sector.

Currently in the state, a union has the exclusive right to represent all employees in contract negotiations.

Wilt said that group lobbies lawmakers every legislative session to throw their support behind their cause. However, he said there's no way the measure will ever became law.

"It's an issue that will never go anywhere in Pennsylvania as long as I can see,'' Wilt said. "I have a lot of union members in my district and I'm not out to declare war on them. It's a war you can't win.''

Overall, he favors giving workers a choice about joining a union, Wilt said.

Stevenson couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
