Sharon Middle School students Thursday showed their patriotism and their class projects in a special program to honor the veterans.

United We Stand was the result of a collaborative effort among all the 7th and 8th grade classes. The project started as a way to celebrate American Education Week which is this week, said Charlotte Roberts, ceremony organizer.

The Sharon Middle School orchestra performed patriotic songs, and the Tiger Kittens and Men of Note sang at the program.

Students explained the history of Veteran's Day and honored staff veterans Ron Taylor, Duane Patterson, James Kashmer, Thomas Riffe, Joseph Simons, Ed Likovich, Steve Spadafora, Ed Bailey, Ralph Trenga, Gene Sarazen and Superintendent Richard A. Rossi.

After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance a chain-linking ceremony was held. Each student made a red, white and blue chain with their name on it. All of the chains were linked together along with the chains of school and community officials.

The chain was to show that we are all unified under the flag regardless of our differences, Mrs. Roberts said. "The flag represents unity," she said.

Jeff Davis' algebra class painted the American flag on the school lawn along State Street. Students Sarah Puhala and Danielle Llewellyn explained how the class determined the size of the flag and the placement of the stars using different principals including the Pythagorean Theorem. There was also a Power Point presentation of the students painting the flag.

The Sharon Middle/High School Color Guard presented the American Flag. A flag donated by the students was unveiled in the cafeteria as David Smith, 8th grade, and Thomas Hahne, 7th grade, unveiled the flag.

Jane Hrycyk's consumer science class explained how they made red, white and blue popcorn balls.

Students explained the Veteran's Day tradition at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and trumpet soloists Nick Brink and Chris Englert played "Taps" to end the program.
