SOUTH PYMATUNING TOWNSHIP

Supervisors may raise taxes one-half mill

South Pymatuning Township supervisors said they haven't decided whether they will raise taxes half a mill to replace a fire truck, which would cost more than $200,000.

Supervisors Tuesday approved placing the proposed 2002 budget on display.

Secretary/Treasurer Glenn Adams said supervisors are discussing with the Mercer County tax office if they can raise the tax for fire service from 1.5 mills to 2 mills because of a change in the tax assessment ratio. With the change in the ratio this year, municipalities can raise taxes only 5 percent.

At this point there is no tax increase, said Supervisor Burt Devries.

Under the old assessment ratio, 13 mills went to general spending, and 1.5 mills went to the fire department, for a total of 14.5 mills.

Under the new assessment, 4.3 mills would go to general spending.

A mill is $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value; assessments are based on a property's 1970 market value.

At 4.3 mills, a property owner with a home assessed at $30,000 would owe $129 in property taxes, without the fire levy.

With the fire levy and half-mill tax increase, taxes would be $150, $5 more than last year.

A mill previously brought in about $8,000 for the township; now it will bring in about $24,000.

This would be the first tax increase in the township in 12 years, supervisors said.

The budget is on display at the township building on Tamarack Drive. Supervisors expect to approve the final budget at 7 p.m. Dec. 3.
