HERMITAGE

Teen tobacco agent stings store clerk

An underage tobacco sale sting yielded its first citation to an employee at Kwik Fill gas station, 3915 East State St., Hermitage, police said.

"A clerk who sold the juvenile a package of cigarettes was cited by Hermitage police for furnishing tobacco to minors," said Larry Matchak, deputy police chief.

The charge is a summary offense with a fine between $25 and $100, police said.

Hermitage police received a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Health to monitor underage tobacco sales.

According to Sherryl Giles, school resource officer for the police department, eight teens, ages 15 to 17, will make about 24 attempts to purchase cigarettes from city establishments in the next six months.

The minors also tried to buy cigarettes at McQuaid's on North Hermitage Road; Pennzmart at State Street and North Hermitage; and Tic Toc Food Mart on East State Street. They were denied, police said.
