Man charged in St. Joe's ref assault

A 19-year-old Masury man turned himself in on a warrant accusing him of assaulting a basketball referee, police said.

Nathan Sample, 19, of 686 Hazelton St., was arrested at 12:56 p.m. Monday at the police station on charges of assault on a sports official and disorderly conduct, police said.

Sample attended a Feb. 23 game at St. Joseph's School in Sharon between sixth-graders from Brookfield and St. Joseph's, police said. During the game, he went onto the floor, argued with an official, grabbed him and shoved him into the stands, police said.

Sample left after the incident, police said.

He was arraigned before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon, and was released on his own recognizance, a clerk at McMahon's office said. His preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. March 21.
