Students compete at Academic Games

Hermitage School District students competed in Academic Games tournaments at Slippery Rock University.

Thirty-three students took part in an Equations Tournament.

Students from 17 school districts in the region took part in the Academic Games math event sponsored by Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV, Grove City.

Teams from Delahunty Middle School, Hermitage, placed in the fifth- and sixth-grade division.

The Delahunty Multiples won second place with Kristen Thompson, Carly Turk, Ale Sonoga, Danny Andrusky and Chris Hull.

The Delahunty Factors came in third place with Cassie Sherry, David Lumpp, Ryan McCann, John Leicht and Alexis Johnson.

The Delahunty Integers were the fourth-place team with Stephen McBride, Ryan Janusko, Andrew Masotto, Ryan Zippie and Andrew Thiel.

The Delahunty Products placed eighth with Carly Fleming, Tyler Kusich, Martina Hirschmann, Garen Ream and Josh Watkins.

Andrew Thiel, Ryan Zippie, Ale Sonoga, Danny Andrusky, Cassie Sherry, Carly Fleming, Marie McBride and Amber Walters were undefeated in three rounds of competition.

Liz Davis, Logan Rock, Kelly Knisley, Will McIntyre and Aelish Snyder also took part.

Hermitage Elementary School's Billy Dzurisko, Megan Rizzuti, Anna Kolar, Annie Moroco and Harriet Cao competed in the third- and fourth-grade division.

Paul Estock, Mark Slezak and Nancy Bires coached the students.

Twenty-four Delahunty students will compete in Academic Games Tri-Bowl on Tuesday and Wednesday at Geneva College, Beaver Falls. Students must be undefeated competitors or members of a first-place team in Academic Games including Propaganda, On-Sets, Mr. President, Linghishtik, World Events and Equations.

Students from Hickory High School and Hermitage Middle School swept the Equations tournament.

Hickory High took first and second place in the Senior Division. Matt Battyanyi, Darla Anselmi, Ed Likovich and Josh Stelle were undefeated. Nik Preece also was on the team.

Danielle Caszatt, Brett Sabella, Nikki Estock, Michael Muha and Mark Reeher made up the second-place team. Ryan Fleming, Danielle and Brett were undefeated.

The students qualified for the Western Pennsylvania Academic Games Tri-Bowl tournament set for today and Wednesday at Geneva College.

Allison Turk, Katie Grober, Mark Darby, Matt Likovich, Sean DeJulia, Andrew Rademacher and Robert Chirila also qualifed for Tri-Bowl. Rhonda Paglia is the coach.

Paul Leicht, Kristen McBride, Ryan Harteinstein, Erin Mentrek and Ricky Martell made up the first-place team from Hermitage Middle School. Erin and Ricky were undefeated.

Undefeated players Ashley Bryan, Nikki Sheppard, Allie Lazar, Jimmy Blair and Willie Pletcher led the two teams tied for second place. Caitlin Whaley, Justin Felder, Chelsea Iowry, John Macris and Eddie Grober rounded out the groups.

Taylor Hebble, Jordan Benes, Brett Carly, Mike Benson and Brita Lanfried were members of the third-place team. Taylor and Jordan were undefeated.

Adam Mariotti, Steven Stanovich, Christina Woods, Josh Peagler and Can Konop made up the fourth-place team. Adam was undefeated.

Michelle Calvert and Bruce Bitler coached and advised the middle school teams.

About 1,000 third- through 12th-graders from five counties competed.

Carol Amidon coordinates the Academic Games for Midwestern Intermediate Unit IV.
