Volunteers put out 1 fire, let 2nd burn
Jamestown volunteer firefighters responded to two house fires Friday, one of which they were able to put out quickly and the other they were asked to let burn.
Firefighters were called at 1:31 p.m. to 710 Delaware St., where an electrical fire started in a wall by a chimney.
Although the fire caused $14,000 worth of damage, firefighters said they expected the Scott Morgan family was back in the house by the evening once electrical repairs had been completed.
Firefighters were back in their gear at 5:37 p.m. when a call sent them to 2799 N. Fifth St.
Owner Tom Cyphart, who is believed to live in the Pittsburgh area, but was in town, asked firefighters to let the house burn, firefighters said.
The house was vacant and believed to have been uninhabitable, firefighters said.
Because the house was not insured and state police did not plan to investigate the blaze, firefighters let the house burn, firefighters said.
Greenville firefighters assisted at both calls.
