Man's car hits stopped rig, kills trucker, hurts passenger

A New Jersey truck driver was killed Wednesday when he was hit by a car while standing along the side of Interstate 80 in East Lackawannock Township, state police said.

William L. Keimel, of Rockaway, was pronounced dead at 2:52 p.m. at United Community Hospital, Pine Township, by Mercer County Deputy Coroner Scott Black, police said.

Police said Keimel's tractor-trailer was disabled on the westbound side of the interstate about 2 p.m. Wednesday. He and a passenger, Malcum W. Church, of Shapparton, Victoria, Australia, were standing alongside the truck's trailer when a car driven by Frank S. Deronja, 70, of Springfield, Va., left the road, traveled along the north berm and hit the right side of the trailer. Deronja's car then hit Keimel and Church before rolling onto its roof and landing off the north berm, police said.

Church was taken to UCH with Keimel and later flown to Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, where he was in condition this morning.

Deronja was taken to state police barracks in Jackson Township, where he was treated by paramedics, police said. Deronja was released pending further investigation, police said.
