More assault charges filed against Jamestown man

A Jamestown man arrested by Greenville-West Salem Township police for forcing a pickup off the road with his own faces additional charges for pulling a deer rifle on a woman.

State police said the woman woke at 5 a.m. Sunday to find Randy E. Gessler, 42, of 505 Jackson St., pointing the loaded .243-caliber rifle at her head. He also said he would kill her, police said.

At 10:11 a.m., Greenville-West Salem police received a call of a truck in a ditch on North Maysville Road in West Salem.

The same woman from the gun incident was driving the truck and said Gessler had forced it off the road by ramming it in the driver's side with his pickup, police said.

The woman said Gessler had chased her and threatened to kill her, police said.

The woman's sons, ages 16 and 7, were in the truck with her, police said.

Gessler fled when one of the boys ran to a house to call for help, police said.

Police said they stopped Gessler on state Route 58 in Greene Township and saw blue paint and damage to his pickup. An unloaded .243-caliber rifle was in the truck, police said.

State police charged Gessler with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and making terroristic threats.

Greenville-West Salem police charged him with three counts each of aggravated assault and reckless endangerment and one count of making terroristic threats.

Gessler was arraigned by District Justice Ruth M. French, Mercer, and was taken to Mercer County Jail after failing to post $50,000 bond.

Mrs. French set a preliminary hearing for Oct. 7 before District Justice William L. Fagley, Greenville, but a spokeswoman for Fagley said that date will be changed due to a scheduling conflict.

Gessler also faces a summary trial before Fagley at 3 p.m. Oct. 18 on a charge of criminal mischief for kicking in a door at his home and damaging items inside at 6:40 p.m. Aug. 8.

Gessler pleaded guilty to a charge of harassment for pushing, shoving and slapping the woman at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 7. He was fined $25 and costs.
