Despite reports that the fire that killed a 21-year-old Grove City man Monday was accidentally caused by his mother, Grove City Volunteer Fire Captain Kirk McClure and Grove City police said the cause is still undetermined and under investigation.

According to television news reports, Theresa Donahey, of 635 S. Center St., may have been trying to light her cigarette when the tube to her oxygen machine caught fire, igniting a couch.

Killed in the blaze was Jason Gladd, who was in his bedroom at the time of the fire, which broke out at about 2:30 a.m., Grove City police said. The burning residence, which contained two apartments, took firefighters about three hours to bring under control.

McClure said that Gladd died in the front second-floor apartment and added that it did not appear that the apartments were equipped with smoke detectors. A woman and her 5-year-old daughter, who occupied the first-floor apartment, escaped unharmed.

Ms. Donahey was taken to United Community Hospital in Pine Township for treatment of smoke inhalation, then later transferred to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, police said.

She was no longer in the hospital Thursday evening, according to a nursing supervisor, who did not know when she was released.
