Two units of Pa. troops mobilized for war

The Associated Press

Two reserve units with soldiers from Pennsylvania will be mobilized as part of the war on terrorism, the Army said.

About 175 soldiers will be called up from the 99th Regional Command's 300th Chemical Company and the 978th Quartermaster Company, and could remain on active duty for up to a year, the Army said Wednesday.

The 300th Chemical Company is based in Morgantown, W.Va., but has detachments of about 30 soldiers each in Beaver Falls and Johnstown.

The 978th Quartermaster Company is from Edgemont, Dauphin County, near Harrisburg. About 35 of the soldiers being called up are from that unit, officials said.

The soldiers will go to Fort Dix, N.J. before being assigned to the field. The "ultimate duty location" of the units hasn't been determined, Army officials said.

Soldiers in the 300th Chemical Company are trained to create smoke screens and to decontaminate people exposed to chemical, biological or radiological attacks. The unit recently conducted drills simulating a biochemical terrorist attacks in Morgantown and San Francisco.

The 978th Quartermaster unit is a supply outfit.
