Olive Brown running for council

Olive M. Brown., 61, of 323 Fruit Ave., Farrell, has said she is running for a seat on Farrell City Council.

There are three seats on council up for election, including the mayoral slot. The council seats pay $3,000 a year.

Ms. Brown is coordinator of Minority Health Center and Community Health Services, which is affiliated with Sharon Regional Health System, and founder and executive director of Endorse Resistance of All Substance Abuse Everywhere.

"I have worked in the Farrell community to try to better the community for the last 26 years," she said. "I would like to see the stigma that hangs over Farrell be removed. With a more active community revitalization plan, Farrell is a great place to live. I have watched Farrell go down and I know that Farrell can be brought back; not to where it was, but to a place where our children would be proud to come back to."

The Sharon native is a board member of the SRHS Employee Development Fund and the Farrell Area School District Foundation, a member of the 21st Century Community Learning Center advisory board, and member of Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America.

She is a past board member of Mercer County Head Start and the Prince of Peace Center, and former member of the Mercer County Living Center advisory board.

She serves on the missionary committee of Greater Mount Zion Church of God in Christ, Women's Christian Council, Shenango Valley Christian Women's Fellowship, Greater Farrell and Wheatland Community Affairs Committee, Gateway Task Force, Committee Women 2&2 Guild and Urban League Guild.

She founded Wheels to Work, Wheels for Kids and People-N-Action, organized the Sharon North Flats Reunion and was instrumental in getting Farrell and Sharon to apply for a state Weed and Seed grant.

Among her honors are Community Baptist Church Citizen of the Year, Shenango Valley Urban League Supportive Networking Award and Buhl Day honoree.

The mother of five, grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of two also has been honored for community service by Mercer County Frontiers Club, the urban league and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
