Jury finds

of assaulting
second woman

Charles D. Norris celebrated his 30th birthday Thursday by sitting in a Mercer County courtroom as a jury convicted him of assaulting a woman, the second such verdict against him in a week.

Norris, of Farrell, was found guilty of simple assault, reckless endangerment and making terroristic threats, said District Attorney James P. Epstein.

The jury, after a two-day trial, acquitted him of aggravated assault.

Norris showed no reaction as the verdicts were announced, Epstein said.

The verdict came in at about 5 p.m., about an hour after the jury asked Common Pleas Judge Thomas R. Dobson to again define simple assault and reckless endangerment, Epstein said.

Norris was charged with the Dec. 18, 2001, assault of Rhanada McHenry, 23, of Sharon, at Roamers bar, Farrell.

He hit Ms. McHenry in the eye with a drinking glass, breaking the glass, and then hit her in the forehead with the broken glass, Southwest Mercer County Regional police said.

He also punched her in the face, pushed her to the floor and threatened her, police said.

Dobson set Norris' sentencing for the first week of March, Epstein said. Norris also will be sentenced that day on his conviction of aggravated and simple assault and reckless endangerment for throwing hot cooking oil on Crystal Bailey Sept. 30 at a Quinby Street home in Sharon.

The jury, acting last Friday, acquitted Norris of another count of reckless endangerment.

Norris faces one more trial next month, although Epstein couldn't remember the circumstances of the case.
