Programs funded for 3 more years

Farrell school officials have received more good news about a grant that will allow them and Sharon school officials to extend their afterschool programs for another three years.

Lynn Powell, Farrell's grant writer, said the office of state Rep. Michael C. Gruitza, D-7th District, Hermitage, told her that the schools will receive $289,010 for the first year of the grant, which begins immediately, $416,803 for the second year and $423,889 for the third year.

A news release the state issued about the 21st Century Community Learning Center grants only mentioned Farrell, the lead school for the local grant, being awarded $289,010.

The grant will allow the schools to expand their Children's Opportunities for Outside Learning programs to serve grades three through nine, open new afterschool classrooms at Farrell High School and West Hill Elementary in Sharon, and hold programs five days a week instead of four.

The COOL program, funded by a previous three-year grant that ends in May, has served grades four through eight.
