College
to host Houston, gospel musical

Westminster College, New Wilmington, will present the gospel musical "Your Arms Too Short to Box with God" at 8 p.m. Feb. 13 in Orr Auditorium.

The play, which features Grammy Award-winner Cissy Houston, revolves around the Biblical story of Jesus from the book of Matthew. Musical numbers include "There's a Stranger in Town," "Be Careful Who You Kiss," "See How They Done My Lord" and "Where Were You When They Crucified My Lord."

Ms. Houston, mother of pop singer Whitney Houston, began her career in a family gospel group, the Drinkard Singers, which also featured her nieces, Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick. The trio was later employed as back-up singers for Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley and others for hundreds of recording sessions.

Her career continued as lead singer with the Sweet Inspirations for hits such as "Why," "Let it be Me" and "To Love Somebody," and then as a solo performer with hits such as "I'll Be There," "Think It Over" and "Be My Baby."

In 1997, she won a Grammy award for her gospel album "Face to Face."

Ms. Houston's new book, "How Sweet the Sound: My Life with God and Gospel," recalls the role God and gospel played in her family's life.

The event is free and open to the public, and is sponsored by the Westminster College Office of Diversity Services and Powers Trust. Information: (724) 946-6178.
