As the country remains at orange alert while President Bush threatens action against Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, the increased security levels have shut down parts of the Shenango Reservoir area.

At 8 a.m. Monday, "we were instructed to raise our security level," said Richard Eggar, Department of Conservation and National Resources park ranger at Shenango River Lake.

Part of increasing security includes shutting down access to the Shenango Dam and Outflow Area and the Mahaney Recreation Area off Kelly Road in Sharpsville and the Shenango Recreation Area off West Lake Road in Pymatuning Township.

Walking, jogging and fishing are prohibited in those areas, although other parts of the Shenango River Lake area, such as the Clark Recreation Area, Golden Run and state Route 846 access areas are still open, Eggar said.

The resource manager's office, also off Kelly Road, is closed to the public during the alert, and the sale of annual passes, Golden Age cards and pavilion rentals at the office are suspended until further notice, Eggar said. An announcement about where to buy these items will be made at a later date, he added.

Eggar said he was not allowed to discuss any other security measures.
